Snow/winter tires
Guys~ I'm shopping for snow tires for both my E55 and Cayenne Turbo. I almost rammed into a car today(got a lot of snow today) in my Cayenne and found out first hand that the stock Pirelli P-zeros suck in the snow. Any suggestions for both?

Luke from TireRack highly recommended the Dunlop WinterSport M3 (new tire on the market this year). TireRack stock is very low do to popularity, would order soon.

High Performance winter tires
These tires are designed to meet the needs of winter driving on Performance vehicles and are available in the low profile sizes used as Original Equipment on cars and light trucks. They trade a little ice and snow traction for enhanced handling and high speed capability. Due to their unique tread compounds and handling capabilities these tires must be used in sets of four.

Studless Winter tires
These tires feature the latest in tread design and compound technology to provide winter traction for cars and light trucks without the inconvenience of using metal tire studs. with all of that said there are a couple of additional notes
#1.) DO NOT USE THE BLIZZAK WS50 ON A MERCEDES BENZ VEHICLE WITH TRACTION CONTROL
#2.) same goes for the Dunlop Graspic DS2
#3.) we can team up any wheel to any tire to make a specific winter package to meet your needs

*****SUMMER TIRES*****
Maximum Performance:
These are the absolute best performing tires on the market. Great steering response and wet/dry traction (not for use inthe snow!!!) which is at home on the track.
1.)Pilot Sport PS2
2.)Eagle F1 GS-D3
3.)S-03 Pole Position
4.)Ecsta MX
5.)Pilot Sport
6.)P-Zero Nero
There is 1 glaring omission in this list. It is the BFG G-Force T/A KD. The reason for this tire not being on the list is because of its lack of versatility. It is the best performing tire in the dry but, is almost scary in the wet.
Ultra High Performance:
A step down form the Max tires but, still exceptional performance which fits most application for a street tire that can be driven very aggressivley.
1.) Firehawk SZ50 EP
2.) Potenza RE750's
3.) G-Force KDW
4.) Sport 8000
Ultra High Performance All Season:
Performance tires which are capable of going through the snow.
1.) Sport 5000
2.) Michelin Pilot Sport A/S
3.) P-Zero Nero M&S
4.) AVS DB S2 (quietest tire I have ever driven)
5.) Continental Extreme Contact
6.) BFG G-Force KDWS
7.) HTR+
Budget Performance Tires:
Summer performance with a cost effective tire when your budget is a concern. (based on performance not cost)
1.) Yokohama AVS ES100
2.) Fuzion ZRi
3.) Sumitomo HTR Z II
4.) Kumho Ecsta Supra 712
5.) Sumitomo HTR Z
6.) Dunlop SP Sport FM901

Dunlop M3
I ran Dunlop M3 tires through last Winter here in Illinois, and thought they were remarkable.
Very good in the wet, and beyond expectations when combined with the ESP in snow.
I've just installed them again this year, although I use Moda rims so it is a quick change. (No point in using high $ rims in the salt that is used in the Greater Chicago area).

Tire Rack is out of M3 for the E55...
To run the M3s you had to run 245 on all four corners. I agree that if you deal with a lot of snow then the 245s are needed. Here in NJ I found the 245s M3s to be scary on drive pavement in the E55, I have now switched (for other reasons) to the Mich. Pilot Alpins in the standard size.
For the Cayenne your best bet is to pick up a set of 18" turbo wheels and do the Pirelli Scorpian Ice an Snow, they made it through last winter prior to PCNA repurchasing the Cayenne.

I have the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on my E55 and IMO they are a pretty good compromise tire, decent dry and wet performance, and mileage ~20k miles. I don't drive the E55 in the snow. I've decide to go with the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 when the current set wears out.
I put a set of the 18" AT Italiia S5 with Dunlop Grandtrek WT M2 on my '04 Touareg V8 as recommended by Tire Rack. I haven't run these in the snow yet but they look like they will certainly do the job. I'd think the M3 would be just as good if not better.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know this is a stupid question, but do snow tires really make a huge difference? I've never had snow tires.

Having Grown up in da Burgh....
The E55 is going to need dedicated snows, unless you plan to leave it in the garage when it snows? Looks like we are going to see the black and gold in the big game this year!
