Why such a difference in HP between E55/113.99 and SLR 155.98?

Since they are using the same block and nearly the same boost, why does the SLR have 121 additional horsepower? Could one dip into the SLR parts bin to increase the 113.99 output?

Could be a number of things. Chip, Exhaust, Pulley, Pistons, Intake, and just general tune.

The difference is a combination of a # of factors:

The Slr is more "precise" in tolerances and said to take twice as long to hand-build the motor.

The boost in the SLR said to be 2 more lbs. for more HP

The intercooling on the SLR is far superior meaning greater upper-end HP
It also makes a big difference w/the 2 extra lbs. boost previously stated

The exhaust on the SLR is also not as restricted as E's--aiding in more HP

This is just the beginning to why higher HP #'s in the SLR

.................If we're willing to drop 20K into engine upgrades(including cooling) we'll too be putting out 617 Hp to our E's..... The day will come we'll be doing those #'s consistently. When Evosport stage 4 is done-they'll be there!!!

Hope this helps as to explaining the differences

As others on this board have already stated, the big problem with getting more power out of the e55 engine is taking care of the heat. When the aftermarket tuners start making parts that address this issue I think you will see big gains in HP from the E engine. Currently they are doing things to increase boost etc. but with increased boost comes increased heat and so the HP gains are not what they should be. I live in Wisconsin, two days ago it was sunny, clear and 15degrees F. The car felt noticably faster to me, I believe just because of the cold air. The E engine needs a better intercooler, better headers and other parts to deal with the heat and then you will see big gains.

Would kleemann headers make a big difference ?

If the heat issue is fixed-The headers will make a big/noticeable difference.

The stock exhaust collector is only 40mm wide? (1.6 inches) Great for low end tq. but kills upperend HP. This is really where you will notice the Headers-going into the mid-upper range of the gears and how well it pulls "through the entire gear"

I wouldn't invest until the heat issue is solved though. Just my .02
