OEM Illuminated Sills versus others

I'm set to take delivery of my car at the end of February and have been debating about whether to add illuminated sills. My dealer has quoted me about $1700 for the OEM parts plus install. The breakdown: about $1100 for the parts and electrical harness; $600 for the labor (2-3 hours estimate). He's located in Riverside, CA.

So, I was looking at another thread this morning and came across the site www.formymercedes.com. They have the sills for $150, not including install (but I imagine that I could find someone to do this in the $300-500 range).

Has anyone purchased or used these sills? Can anyone compare the quality of these sills to the OEM ones? Other than the natural warranty concerns (voiding because of a non-OEM part), are there any other risks that I should consider? Are there hidden costs that I am missing that makes the OEM sills a more attractive buy?

That's about right for factory AMG sills. You get what you pay for. If it seems too good to be true it probably is, etc........

Marc,

I assume that the price that was quoted to you was for 4 sills. Not 2. I paid the same in parts, but half that in labor.

Ditto on the oem parts for four sills. As to labor, mine was less than Marc, more than you. Your labor quote is exactly that for two sills - think someone at the dealer did a two-sill labor quote for four sills. LOL, enjoy, you're the beneficiary!

I purchasesd the sills at formymercedes.com and just had them installed. Installation was $200 and in my opinion they look fantastic. Save yourself $1600 and order aftermarket.

Have had these for over a year on the car and no problems. Cost was about $300. I purchased them from Harris, who can customize the wording to whatever you want. I went with AMG

BklynMarc, Hope this picture helps

I just received my factory Mercedes AMG illuminating door sills. I got them direct from a friend in Germany. Price was 595 Euro's about $760.00 USD. I went to my dealer and they wanted like $1150 for the set of 4. I figured even with the high Euro dollar I still faired better than buying them from my dealer.

Now I have to install them.

I just received my sills from formymercedes. They look like good pieces (quality-wise). I'll post pics and brief review once I install them this weekend.

MBH,

Would your friend be inclined to start a little import/export business with me as the first customer? I think I have a few hundred Euros lying around from my trip in October.

Let me know.

04E55,

Thanks for the photos! How long did it take you to get them from Harris? I've heard great things about his sills, both on this board and the C55 board.

I was the one of the first W211 E55 sills he produced, so it took a good three months if I remember correctly. I have enjoyed my dealings with Harris over the past year and should be getting my OEM AMG LSD system from him within the next several weeks.

For the money you can not go wrong with these sills.

I doubt it he is a factory BMW engineer and doesn't have much time on his hands with 4 kids and a wife if ya know what I mean.

Best Wishes with your biz,

My sills look identical to the picture above. I paid $200 for the installation here in Gilroy.
