'07 A4 S-Line 3.2, '87 560sl, '04 E500 Wagon
Need definitive ruling on navigation in my '04
I have an '04 E500 wagon, and want to add navigation. I know that my car is pre-wired for Navigation, but have heard two differing thoughts on whether my car has a CD or DVD drive. This obviously impacts the addition of the Navigation system.

"E55Soon" has done an retrofit. He even swapped out the head unit. You might want to check with him. He's very helpful and friendly.
From what I've learned so far. Assuming you have the COMAND with the display screen, you will need to purchase the navigation retrofit kit which consists of a DVD drive that goes in the trunk, an antenna splitter, some mounting bracket hardware, and of course you will need to purchase the map DVD. This is regardless of what you have in the headunit (DVD or CD).

US spec W211s from 2004 and up have a factory fitted DVD comand head unit in dash. 2003 US W211s MAY have a DVD comand head unit in dash, but this is NOT standard.
A navigation drive can be retrofitted in a 2004 W211 for sure.

Oh yeah, I was going to mention SteveNL but forgot...
You might just want to check with him on the complete install. Steve can retrofit a DVD COMAND for you if you don't have one. BigSis knows where to reach him.
