E63 Jerky Transmission Issue
My E63 is very jerky at low RPM, mainly noticeable when accelerating slowly from stop. This seems to only occur when I start slowly while if I start fast by flooring the pedal it seems to be okay.
This problem was discussed here before and the problem seems to be with the multi-clutch transmission. I'm wondering if anyone has an update on this issue and if any measures taken has helped to resolve this problem. The problem is not unbearable, but it is frustrating at low RPM's since it feels like the car will stop or something, and sometimes i end up pressing the accelerator pedal more which results in sudden quick accelration tht could be dangerous at slow speeds. I have not taken this problem to the Mercedes service center yet, but if there is something they can do or should do, please let me know so that I can finally take this in to the service center. Thanks. |
I have the same problem with mine and my car has been to the dealer twice. they reset the transmission and it seems a bit better now but it is very noticeable when your in "R" and back up the car rapidly. A report has been filed to Germany by my dealer hear but there is no software update to now. Its seem more of a software problem than a mechanical one as it goes away above certain RPM's. I am now used to it but wish it was as smooth as my previous CLS55.

I have the same problem, and I assume that this is the consequence of not having a torque converter: the price of having the responsive manual mode. In other words, i don't think there can be a fix.
My Toyota truck takes off very smoothly. But, I still prefer driving my E 63 I really don't think there is a fix for this problem |
Mine seems to do the same thing. I have about 2K miles on mine now and feel I have learned how to adapt to it. I also feel, as a previous post stated, I felt it was the price you paid for having so many modes. I feel the "C" mode is going to try to place the car in a the lowest RPM range possible which means a jerky feel at low RPMs. Bottom line.... what a fun car!!!

I've experienced the same thing but only on first start up when the engine is still cold. My solution is to switch into S1 at the very start and it then stays smooth. In fact I've abandoned C mode everywhere except on long freeway hauls. The cost is about 2mpg less but it's worth it.

When your refer to S1 do you mean Sport Plus (+) ?

Can someone confirm if the 2010 E63 has MCT? I've read some articles that the E63 has it but I dont see it on the official mercedes website...it just says its 7 speed automatic with speedshift.

To alleviate the problem I always drive in M mode. I find the shifting smoother.
When you come to a stop, I find that when the car/computer downshifts itself from 2nd to 1st the transition is very hard/jerky. What I do is instead is manually shift down from 2nd gear to 1st on my own - it is a lot smoother. Now for taking off at a stop I've noticed that if you have been stopped with the brake depressed for a long period of time, the transmission seems to take itself out of gear and places itself into Neutral. When this happens when you hit the accelerator there is a slight delay in take off. To help alleivate this - again in M mode - I flip the gear lever down and release the brake slightly, this seems to "re-engage" the transmission back into gear - but again if you hold it for too long it will set itself back into neutral. You have to sort of play with it. It used to really bother me, but now I just treat it more like a manual transmission and it seems to feel better. R |
Lately I have been using the "M" mode in the transmission but I'v noticed that the engine heats up pretty quickly as the cooling fans are on on their highest speed. It doesnt happen when I am in sport or sport + mode. Is anyone experiencing this ?

I have R350 and started to observe same problems some people described in here. Do you know if R350 and E63 shares same transmission?

In fact 7speed MCT is a reinforced version of the 7G Tronic seen on the R350, with a wet clutch instead of torque converter.

This sounds like you have unknowingly activated the HOLD feature.

fwiw, it's the same tranny that's in the SLs. I know someone who lemon'ed their SL63 because of this issue.
Apparently the early versions were even worse. They still haven't got it totally cleared up but I'm sure there will either be a hardware and/or software fix for existing models one of these days. On the other hand, they may just dump this current automatic and use the SLS's proper dual-clutch automated manual transmission. That would be the best answer. |

What is this HOLD feature, i haven't read the manual.
I think its a useful feature that gives your brake foot a rest at longer lights without the hassle of putting the car in Park. |
My 7 speed just failed a month ago on my 2006 SLK 55 AMG with 40K miles. It shifted jerky in both comfort and sport modes. The shifting was worse when it was cold. The tec said that the valve body failed and the trans basically ate itself. He also said that he saw a few failed 7 speeds with around 40K miles.

The AMG speedshift 7G-tronic (w/a torque converter) had a TSB for an updated valve body replacement and software upgrade when it first came out. Your car should have had it done :nix: Are you getting it replaced under warranty? You should be able to if the update hadn't been done even if it's just now out of warranty (2006) |

fwiw, not a MCT.

When you are at a stoplight with the transmission in Drive, you can press hard on the brake and an indicator shows up on the dash that says "Hold". I am not sure if the brakes are activated or the car goes into a temporarily Park mode, but the car does not move and you can take your foot off the brake and rest it. When the light turns green, you just press on the accelerator and the car goes.

check to see if this only happens when you are on an incline, may be some type of hill hold assist to prevent the car from drifting backwards with the dual clutch tranny.
