Rear axel fluid flush at 1500 miles?
I went for service a today. My service rep said that every amg needs rear axel fluid flush at 1500 miles and 24 k regardless of performance package. Is this true or is he just ripping me for extra money

Smells a bit funny to me. I've read nothing about it in the manual and I know others have taken their cars in for other reasons and the dealer never mentioned anything about req'd maintenance work that early.

Sorry about the OT--- I agree with E-Rid--- seems to be overkill.

As far as I know it's only mandatory for AMG's with limited slip differentials. Since the engine and transmission has some test miles from the factory, it's the only driveline component that needs break in through driving on the street. With an open differential, the early service is not necessary.

You know, when dealers give you this kind of mumbo jumbo and it totally contradicts your vehicle's maintenance and service manual, you need to have them show you documentation that proves otherwise. In this economy some of them will try anything. And if they do try to pull crap like this then call MBUSA and report it.

The manual says this:
Notes on breaking-in the rear
differential (AMG vehicles only)
The vehicle is equipped with a self-locking
rear differential. For increased protection of
the rear differential, carry out an oil change
after a break-in phase of 2 000 miles
(3 000 km). This oil change will extend the
useful life of the differential. Have the oil
change carried out at a qualified specialist
workshop. Mercedes-Benz recommends you
have this work done at a authorized
Mercedes-Benz Center.
But only the P030 cars are equipped with the LSD. If you look further, you'll see that there are two different kinds of gear oil for the E63. One for LSD equipped cars and one for non-LSD equipped cars.
And if you look in your maintenance manual, you'll see the specific gear oil change intervals for LSD equipped and non-LSD equipped. Big difference in change intervals listed there. And look on page 11 and page 23 for an even bigger surprise. On page 11 they left out the E Class AMG with LSD.![EEK!](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif)
Unfortunately the owners manual is a bit misleading in its wording. Notice the bad grammar, too ("a authorized dealer.") fwiw, I've called MBUSA about this in the past and they say that only an LSD equipped AMG needs the gear oil changed.
So, if you plan to do it anyway, then the big question is what gear oil are you going to use? Fuchs Titan EG 5010 D or Castrol SAF-XJ?![Wink](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Because the manual also says use the Fuchs on non-LSD AMGs and the Castrol on LSD equipped AMGs![Stick Out Tongue](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
When in doubt call or email MBUSA. I wouldn't rely on a dealer's SA.

pls do more homework before responding like this. 220s is right, the manual spells out a differential oil change for those with the LSD. The non P030 models don't have the LSD and don't require the oil change. This has been posted ad-nauseum on this forum.

Give me a break. The manual is worded poorly, and in addition the generic maintenance schedule shows differential changes at 1,500 for all AMG models. It's certainly not going to hurt to do it.
