Does ECU tuning hurt the car in the long run?

Hello guys,

I am wondering if an ECU tune is perfectly safe, or if it could have a bad effect on the car 1 or 2 years down.

I have recently tuned my cars ECU, from the company MCChip-DKR (http://www.mcchip-dkr.com/), and their stage 1 tune took my car up from 375 WHP to 395 WHP, with a significant improvement in torque in the low end in particular, and the high end.

At the moment, the only down side is that I notice my cars temps seem to have gotten a little bit higher. Where I use to idle/cruise at around 100-102, it now sometimes goes up to 105. Especially when I am idling on a standstill, temp seems to s it between 103-105.

Also, now even if I accelerate hard just once or twice, the temp would shoot up to like 110-115, whereas before id have to accelerate hard at least 4-5 times for it to go that high.

Any ideas fellas?

PS. The tuner said the w212 E63's stock tune is exactly identical to the C63's, and I think he worked on the C63's stock tune as a base for my car. Is that true or is it incorrect?

Not the same tune...

The C 63 stock tune is totally different than the E 63 stock tune. I think you will find that a tune on the E 63 will not net you the same gains one would receive from a C 63 tune. I think your gains on your E 63 will be much less than the C 63. I'm sure others here can confirm this.

Let us know how your tune turns out.

Hmm thats interesting cause I was told that the E63's stock tuning from AMG is EXACTLY the same as the C63's. It didnt make sense to me but I dont know that much about ECU mappings anyway so who was I to say otherwise.

The temperature issue seems to be due to the dealership pulling Caltex 5w40 oil instead of Mobil 1 5w40, and I know Mobil 1 is the recommended Brand. I asked them to change it and to flush the coolant fluid, and also check the fan operation. I will receive the car tomorrow and see how the temperatures react if at all.

Anyone else have any info on normal operating ranges for the E63's temps, and recommended oil brand/type? Or on ECU tuning in general?

The C and E maps are different. There is a lot of dialogue about this in the C63 forum. The C63 comes slightly detuned from the factory hence its lower HP totals. I think IIRC it has to do with the throttle bodies being less than 100% open. Therefore you will see bigger gains with the C63 and a different tune for sure.

I gained around 30 rwp with my tune- The C63's see more.

My temps for oil run from 215 to 225 F based on driving habits at the time. The oil is Mobil 1 5-40 ESP.

Wow Vic, 225 isnt too high at all.

Mine can go up to 250 with some heavy feet, highest I got was 266.

Problem is now, even if I accelerate hard just once or twice it goes up to 230.

But im waiting to see how and if a Mobil 1 is better than Caltex, they are both 5W-40 anyway so it shouldnt be that much different right?

Im not that well versed with oil brands and how they hold their temps but I always use Mobil 1. The other day I was in stop and go traffic for 2 hours and the oil temps were up a bit. Once I got to an open stretch they dropped down to 215. And believe me, I drive my car hard- up and down the RPM range- high and low speeds every single day.

250 seems high to me.

As Vic mentioned, the stock tuning of the C63 ECU and E63 ECU is almost 100% different. They come with different firmware, different maps, and different tunes all together.

250 F is actually not too bad if oil temps only stay there very briefly and only after you abuse the car for a little bit - especially in a HOT climate city to begin with.

Ok I changed from Caltex to Mobil 1 and got them to change the coolant liquid as they said it was too concentrated. Temperatures were noticeably better and after 10 minutes of hard driving it only really went up to 225ish, which is acceptable. So I guess it is safe to just keep the tune. Will have to reassess during the summer though :P our summers are HOT!

An aftermarket ECU tune certainly doesn't aid longevity. Risk far outweighs the reward when it comes to the aftermarket tuning of naturally aspirated engines unless you live by at the drag strip. Just my opinion.

Vic and I both got tuned by EO Tuning. It was about $1K. You can do a search for it, we both posted our graphs.

I couldn't agree more. I think it's the other way around, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Unless of course you get some hack job tune.

I was a little thrown off by your numbers at first and could only assume you were referring to Celcius. :-)
My temps go up to 245, but 260 is higher than i've noticed, although, i can't say that it's necessarily bad either. I'm sure your ambient temp has a factor as well. if it's 34+C / 110+F outside, engine temp will be slightly higher.

Although having said that, i'm glad the change in oil and coolant fixed the problem! Great job! :-)

He meant OE Tuning. You can visit their website at www.oetuning.com or PM Jeremy directly on this forum: SALES@OETUNING.
