That question might be too open ended and I think it depends on the car and motor...

But in the context of out W212's I say this:

1. ECU
2. Exhaust
3. Headers (gains are bigger than exhaust but most if not all do exhaust first)

Im not a super modder- I generally do BPU's aka Basic Performance Upgrades except on my GTR where I did a little bit more. For instance on my 997.2TT i have done the ECU mod which yields huge gains and the exhaust and now Im done there. On the W212 I have done the ECU and cut on the secondary cats and resonators (no gains) but still have to do headers for the big gains. I dont think I will do them though as the car is fine where its at and I have other rides which are much faster.

I wouldnt worry too much about the ECU mod- its not excessive and its not like you are bumping boost in a Turbo engine that hasnt been tested. And exhaust is post engine so its all about allowing the car to breath better. I did my exhaust mods for the sound piece and the car just roars much better now.

The ECU gains are pretty strong; circa 30-35 hp at the wheels.

Hi Vic,

Asking about the secondary cats removal, does it drone alot inside the car compared to stock exhaust?

Thanks

While my thoughts are subjective and I might be used to more engine noise than others (having modded GTR, 997's, E55's...etc) it really is quite tame in the cabin until you open up the throttle. I find myself opening the windows to get the full symphony of the exhaust. I recommend this mod.

Ok, I see. I get what you mean. Because I heard an E63 with race mufflers + x-pipe, it sounded deep. But the drone inside the car is just too loud in my opinion. So, I'm thinking of another ways to make the exhaust sounds louder and deeper with minimal drone.
Thanks for your info Vic.
