Traction control question
Hey guys, I was messing around with traction control the other day and have a question. Just to see how it would deal with the power, I left TC fully on and gave it around 3/4 throttle from a stop( dry conditions). I had more wheel spin then I expected in ON. It almost felt like wheel hop. If you could post your experience with how much wheel spin you get in TC fully on I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

With 550hp and 590tq- it doesnt matter if you have ESP on, in sport, or OFF- you can still create wheel hop by simply exploding off the throttle. Also there is no "traction control" button. And the MBZ traction control is always working even if ESP is deactivated:
From the manual
From the manual
When you deactivate ESP®:
ESP® no longer improves driving stability.
the engine's torque is no longer limited and
the drive wheels can spin. The spinning of
the wheels results in a cutting action, which
provides better grip.
traction control is still activated.

Here's Edmunds experience. 2 days ago they posted their #'s for a 2012 CLS63 w/ PP-
Test Results:
Acceleration:
0-30 (sec): 2.0 (2.3 w/ TC on)
0-45 (sec): 2.9 (3.6 w/ TC on)
0-60 (sec): 4.0 (4.6 w/ TC on)
0-60 with 1-ft Rollout (sec): 3.7 (4.2 w/ TC on)
0-75 (sec): 5.5 (6.1 w/ TC on)
1/4-Mile (sec @ mph): 11.9 @ 121.3 (12.3 @ 121.1 w/ TC on)
Tester's comments:
Acceleration: The trick to getting the most from this car (with traction control disabled) is to find exactly the allowable rate of throttle application that the car can manage at launch (1,500 rpm) and thereafter. This car's 0-60 time is severely restricted by the amount of grip the tires can provide (i.e., I can't go to WOT until midway through 2nd gear). Best run was with zero spin. I sampled the "Race Start" program, but it used 4K rpm to start, allowed too much wheelspin and then short-shifted to 2nd (resulting in a slower 4.6-second 0-60 and a 12.4-second quarter-mile at 120.5 mph). Upshifts are blazingly fast and smooth. Wow.
I'm surprised that TC slows it down this much.

I too am having trouble understanding what purpose traction control serves when esp is fully off. Nothing seems to be controlling the wheel spin or drift angle as we have all experienced with esp off.

ESP is there to get the car back in control towards the direction you intend to go. Traction control is to, well, make sure the car maintains traction. Of course, there is a lot of overlap between the system. But I'm glad to hear the traction control is constantly on despite the ESP being fully off.
