2010 E63 AMG as everyday family sedan???

Hello my name is Bryan and I just signed up to MB world.
I'm from Toronto Canada and I'm a big fan of luxury sport sedans.

I've owned a

2010 Chrysler 300c srt8 and currently own a 2007 BMW alpina B7

The time has come to make a change. I was interested in a e63 amg. I test drove one and I fell in love with its looks and the duel personality of its transmission and ride.

Comfort for the wife and sport + for me.

The problem is the wife thinks the car will not be suitable for kids. The alpina we are currently using seems up to the task of hauling around two young children.
Looking at the car, the size of the rear backseat and truck are about the same.
I think it could work.

So my question is to all w212 owners do you use this car as your everyday drivers?

I'd love to hear you thoughts about living with the car on an everyday basis.

Thanks and look forward to your responses.

Lol. Seems like the amg is a natural progression.

Are you a family man?
How is the wife/girlfriend enjoying the car?

No family yet lol but everyone likes it more than my 750, and i do as well. I originally was looking at a 2010 s550 or a 2008 S63 but seen the E63 and fell in love with it

The M156 engine and the W212 chassis is perfect for a family of 4... good room in the back and great power on tap.

The engine is relatively bulletproof but like most high end German cars, refinement is not its key, so you might have some minor warranty issues (get one if the car is out of time). Two young children will not be an issue in this car... and your instant power vs the centrifugal supercharger in your B7 will keep you smiling.

Great to hear. Does your wife drive it regularly?

What are her thoughts on the e63?

I ask cause the car would be mine but I drive a different car to work. ( I work in the construction industry)
So during the week my wife would be using the car to commute to and from her office. I would be driving in the evenings and weekends.

She also test drove an E63 she liked it but didn't love it. I've been trying to convince her it's a great car. But she has an eye out for a 2010 BMW X5 M

Is got a lot of "Pep" but it's an SUV

So I'm really hoping to get some good first hand accounts on how the E63 is like. ( if a Lady would like to jump in and share her thoughts even better)
I will be sending her a link to this thread.

Help a brother out. I can't drive a SUV.

IT LIKE ITS STOLEN!
Me personally I would rather own a X5M over a M156 E63, it's more suitable for the family and faster

She did drive it as technically I did sell her c320 to get the 63. But we recently had kid #3 so wifey gets the Denali. I drive the 500 and e63 both.

What can be said to help you out? It's not like your wife reads this forum...

Get a handle on your wife. And tell her that you would rather not have an SUV.

And what kind of person doesn't think a E-Class isn't suitable for a family? It's designed to hold four adults, I don't see how it can't hold two adults and two kids.

Less-relevant point: At ~ $110 a tank of gas and arguably having a traffic problem worse than LA, weekly fills up will likely be more of a pain than the kids in the back.

More relevant point: depends on how old your kids are and what kind of car seats you have them in. If they are older and in booster, not a big deal. If they are younger and in one of those huge a-- Britax seats, its a a bit tighter and they'll be kicking you all the way to mall and back. To be honest, this car should not have kids in the back... not because they won't fit, but because you'll never drive it remotely like you should. With kids in the back you'll drive it like you drive your grand daddy's Cadillac. Waste of money if you won't get too much play on your own.

Hello Bryan,

I have 2 kids, one turning 4 and the other just over 1 year old. I only install the forward facing car seat directly behind me when I know I need to take/pick the 4 year old after work (take his/her shoes off). The 1 year old stays in a rear seat so he simply gets put into the middle seat without the docking station. With that setup, my mother still fits behind the passenger seat and wife in the front.

The car is a safe vehicle with lots of trunk space. I can fit both Bugaboo strollers and room for shopping bags.

As far as spirited driving, I still do and with my oldest saying "faster daddy".

If your wife decides to test drive the car again, make sure the car is in "S" mode and not "C" (controlled efficiency) mode. This will allow the car to start in 1st and hold gears to higher RPMs.

My only negative to the car is the poor mpg even when driven easy. I knew this going into it as I had a E55 previously. I get about 280 - 300 miles on about 19 gallons.

Hope this answers your questions.

Great car but it gives me road rage. My wife also complains that she has no room in the passengers seat with our daughters rear face car seat behind her.

Thumbs up e63 as daily driver

I also had a 300 srt8, then went to a 2008 E 63, now a 2011 BMW 750 xi m/sport in which I love. As of now my plans are for a 2014 E 63. I have used all of these cars for daily use with three kids. Yes, the back seat in a E63 is marginally smaller then a short wheelbase BMW 750 and the car is a little narrower. The trunk, however is larger than the BMW. By the way the 300srt8 was built on an old MB E class platform , making it close in dimmensions to the MB.
Good luck with your choice.I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies.

Looks like she is unmoved and wants the X5 M.

I guess it's not all bad it is a pretty quick car. I'm gonna stall for as long as possible. I have a feeling the good weather will get her off this SUV thing she has been on lately. She used to go on about how much she loved the alpina. But I f'd up when I didn't pick up a set of winters for the car thinking we would have another mild winter. (Dumb move)

My wife is a petrol head ( god bless her!) but because of the relatively rough winter we had in Toronto. She's starting to change her mind.

Either way lets keep the reviews coming. I have a feeling I'm not the only family man interested in German AMG muscle.

Update:

Well looks like the Wife is starting to warm to the idea of owning an e63. I went to check one out and noticed that a roof rack is able to be installed therefore increasing the storage capacity (when needed)

Anyone got a roof rack installed?

Any issues with the moonroof?

Hi Bryan.

I'm In Toronto too. Like you, I'm in Construction. But I don't take my kids in my e63. I do have a 2013 ml350 bluetec that the wife drives. Have you looked at the ml63? That what I'm looking at next. I think it's the best of both worlds. It's also tuneable with a quick flash to get almost another 150hp and gobs more torque....

2013 e63 AMG

Hey guys,

Please help a potentially new MB owner here. I am based in Toronto as well and am looking into a 2013 e63 AMG. I actually went in to look at the 2014 model but the dealer has a 2013 demo model and is willing to give a good discount which we still need to work on and finalize.

Any advice? Suggestions? Anything at all?

i'm amazed how some people think the e63 is too small. on what planet? it's a huge vehicle. when i was a kid we all crammed into a beetle and made it work.

if there isn't enough room then maybe carry less stuff around what are you carrying that won't fit in the sedan anyways?

if the wife is a petrol head then she would love the e63 amg wagon which is even more versatile and has a bunch more room.

i agree with you though... SUV = depressing to drive. no way would i let my wife force a vehicle on me i didn't want to drive.

Update:

So great news I did end up getting the 2010 e63. There was a lot of discussion with the wife. But after a while she understood the advantages for the AMG.

(I was paying for it.)

My wife has learned to love the car. She always comments on how great the car handles and that because of the responsiveness she was able to navigate out of the tricky situations comuting to and from work.

I have two young children and 2 car seats that fit great in the back seat also hav have enough trunk space for groceries and other junk. Thou it would of been nice to have a cargo net to separate the cargo. My chrysler had this.

The E63 has become part of the family and we look forward to owning it for many years.

Congratulation!
w212 are used as taxis all over Europe so its defiantly a car to get you and your whole family + junk in the boot around.
But, get ready for a bumpy ride since the roads in Toronto are horrible and the E63 as you probably already know is hard as a diamond.
Proud owner since new from 2011 and not planing to sell it.
Also have the G63 and S63 in the family but there is something about the E63 that just makes you love it more then the other ones.

Hehehehe,

I am single (not married, live with my GF in downtown T.O.), no kids. We just got a Wagon. I wouldn't have it any other way. What you need is a MY2014 or 2015 E63 Wagon 4Matic, that'll check all your boxes, and maybe her SUV req.

SUVs are for Americans! (Sorry, I couldn't resist! Just teasing!)...

Welcome to the forum. Same color I have and it's almost like looking at my own car. Well, E-Class can have the back seats folded and that makes it more useful than the S-Class. Thus I can never never own an S-Class due to the amount of things I need to haul around on many occasions.
