Blacking out emblems/nameplates
Ok,
Looking for a little advice/guidance. I am planning on blacking out much of the chrome on my incoming E63.
I was planning on having the window trim wrapped in black vinyl.
I was debating ordering new nameplates and emblems and having them painted. I was able to get part numbers for all the badges and a price quote:
2x V8 Biturbo nameplatesone for each side PN:2228171615 $60.00 USD EACH X2 The E63 trunk badge PN:2118170515 $48.00 USD The S-model AMG trunk badge PN:2128170214 $116.00 USD The Mercedes Benz Trunk emblem PN:2128170016 $14.00 USD The chrome strip on the trunk above where the license plate goes PN:2127430382 $47.50 USD PLUS SHIPPING
Total is ~$350 with shipping. Then I have to get them all painted. IND quoted me about $350 to have them all painted. I am guessing I can have a local body shop paint them for much less, probably ~$100.
The alternative is to PlastiDip the badges. Probably cost me $30-40 in PlastiDip and tape.
The paint would be glass black, the plastic dip is matte black....if the plastidip looks bad I can always get the new emblems and have them painted...only out $50 or so...
Thoughts?

I plasti-dip'd my front grill and emblems it hold quite well. If you want to get smooth and clean look you need to start with wet coats you will get the best result

I kinda like the idea of blacked out badging. What would you do about the black background on the "S?"
Might look nice to somehow get that reversed back to chrome.

Faris,
Thanks for the link! I guess I will just plasti dip everything! Do you have any pics of your plasti dip'd grill? I am getting distronic plus so I don't know if I should try dipping the front MB emblem and just stick to the grill.

i have distronic on mine and when i had my car clear bra'd the tech said there was not piece for that front square. They usually dont do the plastic grill enless you are going super custom
recently i noticed a small rock chip in the plastic...so i bought some clear bra material and put it on my self on that area, distronic still works, no problem...so u can probably dip with out issue
im not even sure if the plastic square does anything because we have a camera behind the rear view

The grill cannot be removed from the bumper with taking the bumper off. I just masked around the grill and the areas that I don't want to paint and took off the masking tape while the plasti-dip is still wet

Hype,
I am not a big fan of the generic, completely debadged look. I would still keep the rear MB emblem so I would need that blacked out anyways. Just personal preference, just like wheels
Faris,
Thanks for the pics! Did IND do your car? I think Vic shot me a PM about it. It looks awesome. Are the red accents also Plasti Dip or red paint?

I hear you man, but I never have heard of the generic look; that's interesting...
on a different note: my 550 has black vinyl trim that was put on for me last October; still looks great to this day

was thinking of going sleeper with E550 4Matic (which is in fact more accurate than E63...) in the back and removing V8 Biturbo on the side... but will need badges to put back when I return the car from my lease.

Do you have a website from where you got the price quotes? I'm considering a different route but will need emblems...

It was either the forum sponsor www.mymercedesparts.com or https://www.getmercedesparts.com/. They were within about $10 of each other for all the parts.
If you need to search for other badges, use the term "nameplate" in the search.

As a thread follow-up, I got my car last week and did the plastidip treatment on the rear & side emblems, the rear chrome strip, and the window trim. The emblems were ridiculously easy, but the window trim was a total PITA! Seriously awful. I can see why some folks get that vinyl wrapped.

I thought of just changing the E63 for E55... then I kinda likked the idea of having a unique E550 4matic Wagon. Still have time to think about it until car gets here in january. I might keep it "stock" to get a feel for it. I don't like to draw to much attention with a car so if it's getting to anoying I will probably go E550 4matic. Only about 1% of population will know that it's a fake!
