I still have my square set-up from the CTS-V in really good shape. Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow 255-40-19, so I'll use those next winter, only slightly higher than the 255-35-19, so it may raise the car a little wich will help in deep snow.

You may have some clearance issues up front as 255/40R19s are almost a full inch larger in diameter than 255/35R19s, and there isn't much margin for error on the front ends of 2014s. I hope it works for you.

Good point to consider. I figured at 27" tall vs 26" the 255-40 are 1" taller dia. wich works out to .5" radius more. So 1/2" less clearance in the wheelwell, but also 1/2" higher off the ground in the deep snow. I hope it works out fine, cause I'll probably give it a try, unless someone knows it wont work.

You will be very surprised at how little clearance there is on the fronts. The gap between the spring perch on the strut and the inner tire shoulder is just a bit more than my finger thickness. When I installed my snow tires, I realized that it would not be possible to run snow cable chains.

Also, at full lock, the tires come within a finger's thickness of the front and back of the wheel well.
perhaps not .5 inch, but I'll be interested in your results.

What we're saying is that it's tight in there... really tight.

Whether it's 5/8" or 3/4" or whatever the exact clearance is, if you take away 1/2" due to larger rubber (and keep the same width and shoulder profile as OE tires) you're looking at possible interference when the parts are moving dynamically.

Definitely interested in whether this works for you as I'd love some more sidewall to protect against the New England / NYC winter.

2014 E63 Sedan
Hi guys. Lot's of great posts and information on this thread which prompted me to join today. Thanks to all for posting. If anyone can help out, I would greatly appreciate it with regards to winter rims/tires. I'm taking delivery of a 14' E63 sedan (non-S) next week and need to figure out a designated wheel/tire setup for winter.

Based on what I've read here on the 8 pages, I decided to call Tire Rack and 1010 Tire.

TR is recommending 19" x 9.5" on all 4 rims and I have the option to run the factory size tires (staggered) Sottozero II's or run squared with 255/35/19 which I could choose from a few different winter tires. I called and spoke to 2 different salesman at TR and they both stated the above as options. *Rims are Verde Parallax.

1010 Tire recommended a 19" x 9" on all 4 rims using the 255/35/19's, but the salesman ultimately sent me an email quote with 19" x 8.5" Replika R152 w/35mm offset to be used on all 4 corners instead of the 9" width first suggested.

My question is with regards to the rim width, should I use 8.5" or 9.5" running squared with 255/35/19's? My concern is for the front rims having clearance if I were to go with the 9.5" as the stock size is 9".

Thank you for the help.

Update:
Spoke with another salesman this evening at 1010 Tires as the one I spoke to earlier today was gone for the day.
1010 Tires strongly suggested the Replika R152 19 x 8.5" due to the front factory rim being 9" wide. Both salesman I spoke with there suggested that rim as a direct bolt on, no spacers, 35mm offset, etc. **They suggested either a square tire 255/35/19 performance winter tire or running a Michelin X ice X-line snow tire 245/40/19, that's H speed rated. They said the X ice will perform better in the snow vs a performance winter tire, but not as well during dry conditions as it'll wear out much quicker, etc.

My question is if I'm sticking with either Sottozero II's/PA4/Blizzak LM32's should I run 255/35/19 or has anyone used 245/40/19's? I'm going to call 1010 tomorrow to see if the 245's they suggested were only for the X ice and not a performance winter tire, etc.

Also, is it best to go with an 8.5" wide rim which in this case the Replika R152 which is only available in Canada and they cannot mount/balance due to customs, so I'd only order the rims or stick with Tire Rack's suggestion on the Verde Parallax 9.5" where I can get the whole package delivered ready to be mounted.

Sorry for extra posts here.

Thank you for that. I'd consider CLS550 rims for sure. Looks great!

Update:
TR still going with the 19 x 9.5 (4) and I inquired about the taller tire 245/40/19 mounted on the Parallax rims. TR stated it would be too tall and do not recommend it. They said stick with the 255/35/19 on their rims.

I'm going to pass on 1010 Tire, even though I like the idea of 19 x 8.5 (4).

Really considering grabbing (4) 2013 - 14 CLS550 MB rims and mounting the 255/35/19 all the way around.

Thanks for the posts and PM's.. Let's see what happens.

Do not check with Tire Rack to see if you can mount tires one sidewall size taller than stock.

Check directly with Mercedes. Your dealer will know or they will ask the factory. I did that on my current BMW and it has saved me from many a bent rim or bubble tire from the potholed hell that is New York City roads.

Totally agree with you. I'm going to check. I only asked TR as that taller tire was what was suggested by 1010 Tire in their email quote they sent after speaking tot them.

Pot hole state for sure and it's amazing....

a 40 in front and a 35 in back means another 1 inch diameter, which is .5 all around. If you turn the wheel to each extreme, you'll notice that it miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight rub on the inner wheel well.

I don't think TR or the dealer has anything to say other than "Im not going to take liability for anything other than original specs."

Im also interested in a slightly taller tire. If you drive an E350 with 18" wheels (1 inch more sidewall) you notice the car is a HELL of a lot quieter inside than ours are. Is it the model of tire? Maybe half. Is it the low profile? Very well could be. But some 1/2 inch taller Michelin AS/3 will probably help me a lot.

The taller tire was recommend by 1010 Tire in Canada. Without confirmation from the dealer, that would raise it at all 4 corners as they recommended the 245/40/19 squared. They mentioned it would provide more sidewall as well. Without knowing for sure if it will work, MBZ recommends the factory staggered sizes or 255/35/19 squared and that will work for sure.

TR is recommending the same sizes as MBZ. When I inquired with TR about the taller tire as 1010 recommended, they said they weren't sure about using the taller tire. Hence, I would only go with the taller tire if the dealer confirmed it. I agree with you as I doubt the dealer will stray away from the MBZ recommend sizes, etc.

Not a chance a 245/40/19 will fit up front on a 2014 without rubbing.

It sure does feel like a lot of people are not reading the contents of this thread with respect to front tire size and EXTREMELY limited clearance.

If you have physical possession of the car, or can get your hands on one... park it with the wheels straight and let it drop to the low position. Now try to feel the inside sidewall of the tire. Go from the top.

And that's with the car just sitting there. No ride motion, so steering input.

That's why I'm going to stick with 255/35/19 on all 4 rims. Blizzak LM-32's.

I may just go with a set like Ace10 is using from a 13/14 CLS550. Local shop I deal with has 4 factory MBZ rims (same as Ace10) that were taken off after the owner took delivery. A little more $ than the TR aftermarket, but I think that's the plan for my winter set up.

Update: 14' CLS550 rims with Michelin PA4's. Done. Hopefully the temps will stay warm for as long as possible here in NY, then the switch...

Does the front of the car drop?? I think only the rear (airmatic) drops...
