Ok, I read the owners manual, I looked under the hood with a flashlight and I can't find a dipstick!. There is a blue "cap" at the right rear of the engine but I didn't want to pull too hard on it as it didn't look like a traditional dipstick. The car is a 2014 E63S wagon. Where the heck is the dipstick?

You mean to tell us that reading the owners manual doesn't show you how and where?

Checking the oil should be covered on pp. 338-40 of the owner's manual.

This is a tool that allows you to access a searchable, PDF copy of the manual. Just select E-Class Sedan/Wagon:

Here is the PDF link (in case it works, sometimes I have trouble posting PDFs here):

Good luck!

That is the same info as in the owners manual that came with the car. However, back where the dip stick shows in the manual for a car with a gas engine, there is what appears to be an electrical connection - and not an obvious dip stick. That makes me wonder if there is a low oil electronic signal on the 2014 E63S. In the owners manual it says the oil dipstick should be on the passenger side for gas engines and on the driver side for diesel engines. On my car there is a dipstick on the driver side with a blue cap (not a ring as shown in the manual). I am assuming that this is for the transmission fluid. Would someone else with a 2014 E63S wagon please check to see if you have an obvious dip stick on the passenger side or if you have found that the blue-capped one on the driver side is for engine oil. Thanks.

When all else fails, pull it out! I checked the dipstick this morning. It is definitely oil (not transmission fluid). So it appears that the pictures shown in the owners manual are reversed (diesel and gas photos). The oil dipstick does not have a loop on the top and is on the driver's side of the engine. So much for trusting the owners manual!

Yes the blue cap a the left(drivers side) rear of the engine is the dipstick. When manuals refer to left and right of a car(in the US). The steering wheel is on the left, and whenever the left side is referred to they mean the same side as the steering wheel. Your manual is correct, you were just looking at the engine from the wrong angle/side.
