Splitview questions

I have about 10 more days to finalize my order and can't decide on the splitview. First, does anyone have any experience with it. good, bad. Also, I understand in theory how it works. But why would you ever need the driver and passenger looking at two different pictures on the same screen. Also, what does it look like to someone sitting in back? Thanks

This short video has a very basic overview of the functionality. And even though it is four years old, it still appears to be applicable with the 2014/15 E class application.

Video was great, but doesn't explain what the rear passengers see?

Watch when the camera swings from passenger side to drivers side, and vice versa. The view from the back seat would depend on the viewing angle. Driver's side would probably see the navi/radio and pax side would get the alternate source. Middle seat will get a headache.

I tried out an E63 Wagon with splitview. I don't know if you've ever seen those computers with a privacy screen in where you need to view the screen at the correct angle in order to see the image and if you don't the screen is kind of black- but the splitview screen works very similarly to that. It's essentially a filter on the screen that allows you to view the correct image depending on what side you're sitting on. Left side of the car views whatever is broadcastin on the left, right views right, rear center only sees a mix of the two and black. If you have splitview turned off you still get the same black effect if you're not viewing at the correct angle. Also if splitview is off you will view the same image on both sides.

Some drawbacks are that the screen is slightly more dim than regular, even when off viewing angles are poor, and resolution is cut in half. This is especially evident on the new S-Class sedan and coupe because it had twin screens right next to each other so you can directly compare the two. On the E it isn't as noticeable since the screen is isolated.

Some advantages to splitview is that the passenger can enter a gps destination while in motion and send it over to the driver's side- whereas normally the car won't let you input a desinstipn through the headunit while in motion. Of course there is an easy workaround with a video in motion cable. Of corse another advantage is that the passenger can view a movie and driver sees the radio or nav screen.

Splitview option is supposed to come with wireless headphones. There is also supposed to be a headphone jack in the armrest compartment, however, I didn't see it on my limited time in the car. Some models are also supposed to have auxiliary inputs but I also didn't notice this.

For me personally I feel like the advantages outweigh the disadvantages and I'll be getting it on the E. However if I were to get an S I would forego this option.

One thing of note is that splitview is technically illegal in five states due to the laws in those states being too dumb to discerne a motion viewing screen between the operator and passenger. You just have to find a dealer that is willing to work with you if you're in this situation. Splitview must also be activated by the MB computer upon delivery.

I have split view on my MY14 GL and note that it works exactly as advertised (and as described very well by xxGenericSNxx). It is easy to use and comes with its own headphones. My kids in particular think it is the coolest thing . . .

My only caveat is that it works great when you are loading a DVD in the system but if you are using movie downloads on your IPad or other Apple product you cannot have the movie play from that device. There may be other folks who are more tech savy than me who can do it but it is limiting to only be able to use DVDs.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Quick question: With SPLITVIEW, when moving and playing a DVD movie can all the occupants hear the audio if you want to (front passenger not using the headphones)?

We have a lot of comedy DVDs and as the driver I don't want/need to see the video but it would be great to hear the audio and my wife could watch from the passenger seat.

Thanks for a definitive response. I'm ordering my first Mercedes (2015 E63 Wagon) and am finalizing the build. I'm very excited!
