Emergency Key Problem with Smart key

Emergency Key Problem with Smart key
I have always kept a spare key taped under my car so if i get stuck I can always drive my car away in a snow storm or 200 miles from home. I cannot figure out what to do with my wagon. I could tape a mechanical key under the car but it will not start the engine. if I tape a smart key under the car anyone who walks up to the car can unlock it and start the car by proximity to the smart key. any ideas or solutions!!

Just a long shot, but does the Smart key works with a small battery inside?
If so, unplug or remove the battery from the Smart key and store it somewhere else, like in the glove box, in a bag with the requiered small screwdriver to place it back. Unlock the doors with the mechanical key and reconnect your battery once inside the car.

If you have MBrace subscription and a cell phone you can request an emergency unlock. You would just need to have the key stored in the car inside a shielded container. There are many, many available options on the market.

If you've got an ezpass, the pouch it came in might work.
Wrapping it in a couple layers of thick aluminum foil might work.
You're just looking for something to block the radio frequencies.
Poke around on amazon and ebay. RF blocker or rf shielding case. Some combination of those words.

If you remove the keylessgo receiver, what remains is the "normal" key slot for the fob. The blade key will not communicate with the vehicle in order for it to operate.
The car functions as it would if there was no keylessgo option installed.
Removing the receiver is a good idea if you wash the car. It will preclude the trunk from opening randomly and other oddities.

This seems to be the answer to the question few of us (perhaps nobody other than the OP) has ever asked. I've been driving over 25 years and never have I had the need for a spare key attached to the car. Perhaps I am more careful than some people with keys, however, a simple solution to the OP's question (rather than messing around with shielding bags or removing batteries from transmitters) is simply not to lose your key. On road trips, we always take two keys, regardless of the vehicle. But around town, it's not really a big issue.
