Hello guys,

I drove an E63 S, from cold and it seemed that it was holding the revs at around a 2500rpm limit, until it was warm (80 degrees) and the oil temp light has gone from blue to white.

Is this normal as an MB safety measure until the engine is warm or, if not, what might cause it?

Any E63 S owners confirm if theirs is does the same please.

Mine will rev freely even when the oil temp stays blue for 5 to 10 minutes as temps are in the low 20F around Montreal

Hmmm, that would indicate a problem - I wonder what it could be?

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Mine does not do that... I can also rev freely with an ice cold engine

It shouldn't do that - however higher revs should be avoided while the oil is cold, I know many people say the car is limited when the oil is cold and that its ok but it is far from it.

Definitely not limited at 2500, something's up. Back when I used to work on cars that would indicate an oil pressure/distribution issue.

On a semi related note...it takes forever for my oil to warm up out of blue...like, sometimes I can drive 15m to my destination and it's still blue. Unless I start to give it some revs, it stays blue extremely long, with minimal increase in temps. Normal?

Normal. When I got the car last december, I went weeks without it warming to full temp on my 10 mile commute.

I also was driving back from an ice driving school on the lake when it was -26C and I went from 90C oil temp back down into the blue while driving about 100-120 on the highway for about 15 kms.

Also... I wish there was something in the dash that would blink or highlight to let me know it is not warmed up yet... Any thoughts other than being in the amg display?

AMG temp display screen is the most informative of the entire lot, IMO... Digital speedo, and two temp readings.

I never move from the AMG display unless I need to know something specific like mileage or tire pressures.

because it is colder up here, I need to constantly be aware of the oil temp.

Same here, as mileage is just a right click away.
