Well, at least one thing that's exciting about the new 4.0 M178 is it being designed from the ground up by AMG like the M156. That is unlike the M157 which is based on a MB engine that has been around for a while. I just wished the displacement would be 25-50% bigger than 4L.

Correct. M278 is indeed its ancestor. From a thread before:
"M156 is actually a newer design than the M157, which is actually based on M278, which in return is based on M273, which came out in 2004. M156 came out around 2006 and was designed to be a racing unit and has features and specifications that are unique to AMG, and thus share very little with other MB engine. That does not mean M157 is no good, but it is simply based on a regular MB design. "

Yes, both are great engines. Indeed, the M278 has gotten little publicity but it is also a great engine.

Yes, the M156/M159 were the first and only production AMG engines designed from the ground up by AMG - introduced in 2006. I doubt we'll see an engine with this unique of DNA again anytime soon.
The M278/M157 were introduced in 2011 EU and 2012 US; they are direct injected twin turbo-charged unlike their M273 predecessor. The M152 is the NA M157 found in the SLK55.
The M273 was introduced in 2006 available as a 4.7L and a 5.5L, and was an upgrade from the M113.
The M113 line was introduced in 1998 which included several displacements/variants including the superchaged 5.5L "M113K" in the E55.
The new 4.0L M177/M178 engines in the new C63 and AMG GT I've heard described as two M133 (CLA45) tied together. The M133 is a derivative of the M270 which is available as a 1.5L 122hp model.

Good infos! That makes me want to jump into another M156 powered E63 and put Weistec supercharger on it. For the rest of the car...let's see...I would like the '14+ interior, '10-'13 exterior, and '15+ MCT.
