If people choose to rebadge their AMG E63 to a E350 is purely by choice, but I would hardly think simply not to choose to debadge mine AMG E63 as showing off.

If I had a regular 911 Porsche and added a Turbo badge, that might be showing off, but I don't consider showing off if I buy my car the way it was build with the appropriate AMG badges.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with leaving the badges on. Heck even mine are on the car. I was merely stating that some people may feel compelled to take off the badging because they might feel like it can be showing off by having all of the badges on the car.

You were simply saying earlier that you don't understand why people debadge their AMG and I was giving a possible reason as to why that happens. I don't mean to rub you the wrong way.

I get what your saying and completely understand. People might think having the AMG badge might be showing off and some people might have E350 badge on a AMG might be amusing.

At the end of the day, the car is what it is and I am not going to make a excuse to hide what kind of car I drive.

If you had a regular 911 and added Turbo badges that would hardly be showing off , it would be being a poser , a fake and or a wanna be . Wearing a fake Rolex wouldn't be showing off but rather a guy that's posing as a person that owns a Rolex . Hopefully that makes sense.

Its kind of an understatement thing. Obviously it is a Mercedes. I am certainly not hiding that fact. But the rest is left to those who know…what model is it. I debadged three of my wagons beginning in '99, and since there was only one MB wagon, what the hell. Now I have a different (meaning really different) wagon, most of my friends have no idea about my personal proclivities. Just another wagon. No idea what red calipers mean. I clearly have a fetish about wagons, but I'm not sure I want everyone to know just how serious it is. At least now I don't have to take a load of kids to T-ball, and when I do, it's just my grandkids who love the G's.

wagon culture?

Perhaps I've misconstrued? It seems like the majority of E63 AMG wagon owners prefer to debadge, while sedan drivers prefer to leave the badges on the car.

Clearly the sedan owners could have bought a wagon, and wagon owners could have bought sedans. So, by definition there are different needs for both sets of owners.

The wagon owners prefer to be understated. They know what they purchased. Who gives a fertilizer what others think about our wagons.

Could've bought a sedan? Not until I am well through my 70's, and then it will be an S whatever, probably electric. There is just something about a wagon!

Re: wagon fetish
When I was in my teens in the 60's, Buster Crabbe (aka Tarzan) lived in my area (Adirondacks). One day his son (Cubby) was in town and had a Chevy Chevelle with wide tires, 4-speed stick, dual exhaust, and it was a WAGON. Never heard of such a thing. Could wagons be cool? I guess they could. I went through a British sport car period and then found families needed wagons. So I evolved. From a Studebaker Lark (flat head 6) to what I have today, all wagons. Top of the heat! My career was good, but my wagon evolution was great.

I blacked out the badges but still ran them. After I finished the color change earlier this year , I sprayed the badges matte graphite to match everything else that used to be chrome. Then after liking how clean it looks without them , I decided to just leave them off. For me the decision was based on nothing other than my personal opinion that the car looks cleaner without them. I feel like even the slightest Mercedes enthusiast will recognize the car as a AMG . The calipers pretty much let that cat out of the bag without any additional badging I feel.

Rebadging to E550 4matic would be closer to reality than E63 since the engine is a 5.5 l... Still thinking about it, with bluefficiency badges on the fenders.

Re-badging it with an E55 sticker yeah would be more accurate. But I don't know, in a world of 328i and 6.3l badging, accuracy has long gone the way of the dodo bird.

Now that I actually have a W212, I'm not so sure on the V8 Biturbo badges -- I'm thinking getting rid of them will clean up the fender profile nicely

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
Also, there are lots of haters out there. Thus I hope debadging would allow me to stay low and stay out of troubles and headaches.

Well, well the C63 configurator is up...and lo and behold, options to delete front fender (which I am considering) as well as rear badges.

honestly, around my neck of the woods nobody knows what an amg is. That was one of the reasons i got an amg. its a wolf in wolf clothing, yet everyone thinks its a sheep. Don't know about you guys but AMG is not as well know as M when it comes to the common folk. my past 2 amg's were upgraded by babus to b63's. I have a family member working there so i get it at cost. so i generaly debug and leave only the babus on. i can count the ppl on one had that knows what it is and even less than that that knows that the car is based on a amg model. and ps.. in my neck of the woods there are a couple of mc12's a veron, 918 a bunch of 458's ect ect.. but you will also find a magnitude of subaru's and acuras and middle of the road cars.. and like water of a duck back most ppl just dont know that MB makes a performance car.. and i love it,,

interesting read.

just about all the respondents here cited 'sending a message' to others while supporting their position. fascinating.

debadging your car is a mating call to car people. you're not pulling the wool over the eyes of someone who doesn't know what a AMG logo indicates to begin with. that person doesn't even see your car. you're speaking directly to those who are familiar with the big motor Merc's- and what it seems like you're saying is: look at me and appreciate how i've chosen (for the benefit of the people) to fly my $100,000 station wagon under the radar.

that's not the embarrassing part. the embarrassing part would happen just after you explained this debadging philosophy to friends at a dinner party.

But you guys also bought the right to do what you damn well want to the car!
I think this is the best post of the thread and I agree, I paid for my badges, they staying on.

some 'interesting' idea's you have there man.....

That is one dumb sentiment, ever consider the fact that the rear end looks so nice with only the star??
keeping the badges sounds like small **** thinking the way you put it, and the fact that your 100 K car needs badges makes me think most people just want to show off

I wouldn't have this problem -- maybe have some friends that would be open-minded as to why you'd want to customize your car?

I like blue, blue is the best color. Anyone who thinks red is the bettercolor is a poopy head.
