Carbon buildup on 2011 Exhaust Tips
Hey Guys,
I just spent about an hour 3 weeks ago polishing up the AMG exhaust tips with cleaners, 4 ott steel wool, and mothers. They looked brand new when done.
Now only 3 weeks later, they are clearly getting obvious blackening again.
Car was just given a full bill of health from dealer and seems to run great. But this buildup at this rate seems like either I am running a bit rich, or I am not aware that this is normal?
If any of you are as obsessive about these type of details, (which I suspect many of you are!!!) Lol how often do you have to clean these?
Any easier trick to take some elbow grease out of the equation?
Thanks in Advance.

Hey man
Normal for me too... I am obsessive as well about this and usually once a week with chrome or steel polish I can clean them up but then steel wool if I'm slacking after a couple weeks
I'm just glad the exhaust heat and soot doesn't tarnish the bumper cover

After cleaning mine I coat the tips with clear tire coating. I spray it on thick and do not wipe it off. It keeps the black soot from sticking and makes it easier to clean next time.

I was thinking of putting wax on them which is essentially the same idea. But since I apply tire treatment already after car wash, this is more practical.
Thanks guys for the replies.
Chears.

I've tried the wax but the heat of the exhaust bakes that carbon in... Didn't seem to help
Are you saying something like wet tire?

Yes, Wet Tire or something like that. I have also used reg. petroleum jelly and smeared in on the tips. The tire wet works ok and is easy to just spray on. I thought of using something on the tips when I was spraying PAM on my waffle maker.

You will never use anything else after using P21s Polishing Soap. It works awesome, and with very little effort. Takes about 5 minutes per side to polish up and make very shiny.

Try Bar Keeper's Friend. I have heard some people tried WD40 with good result. Just make sure you clean up well the flammable residue
