Rear Vibration
Hi Guys
Been a lurker on the forum for a while but need advice please.
I have a 2013 W212 M157. My vehicle is struggling with rear vibrations. I have had all wheels balanced and aligned as well as a new steering column put in. The steering column did help a little with the steering wheel shake but the rear is still vibrating . I read somewhere that it could be the brake discs and pads but how do I get the dealership to check this out . Could it perhaps be the prop shaft ? Thanks

More than likely bent rims, do you live in a place where the roads are rough with potholes? These wheels with the low profile tires bend pretty easily. Use a wheel repair place to put them in their machine and straighten them, much cheaper that replacing the wheels @ around 100 to 200 dollars each for the repair, wheels I hear are around 1900 each.

Thanks merc Amg I have checked that also and rims are perfect even did high speed wheel balancing the car is running on continental tyres if that could be a factor ? Also when I dynod the vehicle the rear was all over the place

Sorry if this seems like a over simplified question but I did not see the answer to it in your posts.
Does the vibration happen without touching the brakes?
If it only happens when applying brakes then obviously it likely is the rotors.
If not, at what speeds do you experience the vibration? And are you certain it is only in the rear?

HI Vrodman no there isnt any vibration when touching brakes it is from around 80kmh upwards. Obviously the faster I go the worse it gets . I told the SA but he said he is not allowed to take vehicle for a test run over 140kmh. Vrodman the steering column also use to shake but they put in a new steering column which stopped that so its def in the rear, passengers say they can feel it when sitting in the back. It almost sounds like a helicopter inside the vehicle LOL

This link will have information that may help in diagnosing your vibration problem. http://www.aa1car.com/library/tires2.htm

So if it gets worse with higher speeds and brakes are ruled out I would consider the following:
A wheel problem, but not wheel balance. Wheel balance usually will have a resonance range. For example, it shakes between 80kmh and 100kmh. But over 100kmh it goes away.
A bent wheel is still in the discussion. I know you said you already ruled it out. But I cannot based on what I have read so far.
The only two things I would consider at this point, again assuming that it is entirely in the rear, is either differential gear alignment issue, or a somehow bent driveshaft. From memory, I dont think it is very possible to bend the type of driveshaft in a E63.
This is the best advice I can offer at this point. I did put myself through college as a Volvo mechanic a LOOOONG TIME AGO. So I know enough to be dangerous. But I certainly dont have all the answers. Wish I did! Lol

Hi Vrodman
IM going to ask the SA to swop out rims and tyres with another E63 at the dealership and take it for a test drive then hopefully we can see if it is the rims. The link homeofstone posted is lenghty and informative perhaps the tyres themselves would be out of round. I think ill just change the conti's anyway not happy with them. Thanks all for the help . Ill keep you guys updated on any info i get

The wheels on these cars bend a lot more easy than I figured, the super low profile tires don't help out either. I had 4 bent rims on my 2012 E63 Wagon, cost me 200 bucks a wheel to get a wheel repair guy to fix them, they put them in a hydraulic press machine. My back wheels were so bad it did sound like a helicopter was tailing me on the highway, one of the rears actually had a crack in it and had to be welded.

I must be missing something here. PSS all around are about a grand alone from tire rack.
I heard the AMG 5 spoke wheels are about $1800 each. Maybe I am wrong on this???
Still though I gotta believe the wheels are at least $500 ea.
That takes us to $3000 total.
Are you just talking about tires?
Or maybe rim straightening and new tires?

I bought a wheel/tire warranty for $1500 that cover the oem rims and tires lol... That's what I meant ... Sorry I worded it poorly
Cheers

So did you buy the warranty when you purchased new tires? Or when you bought the car?
How long does warranty on wheels last?
Seems pretty high for an insurance policy on your wheels only.
Anyway, just curious.
Thanks man.

Bought the policy from Benz when the car was new. Covers wheel and tire damage ... Worth it's weight in gold if I end up using it for wheel damage ... Like any insurance it's only worth it if you use it

Anyway sounds like a good deal actually. As you know my latest are the 2011 E63 and the 2013 fully loaded GLK350 (wifey). Wheels on both cars were perfect when we bought them.
Took wifey 1 day to curb rash the right rear wheel of hers (red curb to boot!). Two hours of steel wool and Mothers and still couldnt get it all out. Ugh.
The beast lasted 4 weeks until the carwash apparently missed the tow rail a bit. Left about a 1 inch x 1/4inch light gouge in front left wheel.
I was actually impressed that a nearly 4 year old car would have no wheel knicks. I assume the parking assist really works quite well!!
So does your plan with Benz cover curb rash too?
Does it expire when factory warranty expires?
Not ethical, but with your plan, you should take a couple of nice off road adventures before it expires! 😃😃😎😎
Then get new wheels!
OK, just kidding before all the ethics professors chime in!

Digging this up from the grave but did you ever get this resolved?
