Your 30pin cable works for your phone too, when you stream it comes through the 30 pin cable

Prior to getting this new Cable he was using a 30 pin Benz cable and an 30 pin to lightning adapter
That's what he and I are talking about now in so much as how the connectivity was with THAT setup and his and his wife's phones
If his phone with the 30 pin cable says no playable files that means the cable is working fine
He doesn't get that message with the new lightning cable .. It says device not compatible
#60
Nothing comes over the 30 pin cable, that picture with no playable files is from the 30 pin connector with lightning adapter.

That's not what he's saying

To be perfectly clear, prior to this I was using bluetooth to stream audio from Pandora, Amazon, etc.
The quality isn't the best, and after reading a bunch of threads here, the cable with the media interface supposedly delivers better sound quality.
I have the Media > 30 pin adapter. I bought the Apple 30 pin > lightning adapter and when I plug it in I get "no playable files" which is correct since there is 0 music stored on my phone. But with this configuration I can't stream music with this cable config.
If I use my wifes iphone I can browse all of the music stored on her iPhone over Command.
When I try the new Media > lightning cable with either phone, it states 'not compatible'

Perhaps this is a 2012 command issue and you need an update

apparently the usb-lightning cable is only good for '13+
I'm still a bit confused.
#64
so your 2012 has a USB cable? my 2012 has the Media cable.

Says I need a 6.0.2 where do I look if I have that? Some Engineering menu?
Why is this so hard

That USB port is for the Command, not for your iPhone....
I have a 64GB USB stick that has all my daughters music on it.

that's super odd. It could be the command unit is not up to date. I plug my iphone 6 in and immediately it plays music from the phone. If I pause the music and open up pandora/soundcloud/ youtube that music will immediately start to play.

If anyone who this works for could help me out with a page from the Engineering menu I'd appreciate that.
To get into Engineering mode Hold the following three keys (while the command is on) "end call + 1 + #"
Once you are in there you can use the rotary knob to navigate around.
in Section 3.18 I find this,
I am assuming Device Version is the firmware.
Can you guys post what yours are?

**UPDATE**
BlownS4 was nice enough to help out and send me his cable, which upon arrival did not help/work.
We worked through a few different ideas, and the last idea he had was to actually have 1 song synced to my iPhone (previously had zero music on my phone).
Added 1 song to my phone and then I was able to stream music via the Media Cable.
So if anyone else has this problem, you MUST have at least one song on your iPhone/iPod.
Thanks BlownS4!
