my 2012 needed an auxiliary battery during ownership- received similar message, aux battery malfunction --I tried to use my battery tender on it, to no avail.. dealer replaced on warranty - One would think the car's diags could also present an error or warning message regarding main batt status.... I use the battery tender on all my vehicles probably twice a year-- surprisingly, modern vehicles (at least those I have (Saabs, Chevy Silverado, Ford Expeditions, and the e63) do not keep battery fully charged, in fact, under 80% of total charge is the norm I encounter when deploying the battery tender(one of the best 50$ I ever spent ) regards- .

You can help it along by draining it and then rapid recharging it. I also found that having a heated garage greatly extends the battery life. The battery in my M5 lasted 7 years.

Your the go to man Peter. You know how to prolong your battery and you know how to kill your battery ie double click your push button and turn the radio on, make a long lunch and eat it with the family, 2 hours later. Have your road side assistant number and give them a call. By the time they get to your house. You will for sure get a new battery. Just saying.
