E63 engine ticking
have a new e63 wagon. i've been dealing with a lot of little issues (mostly interior noise).
there is a rattle that occurs when the car hasn't been driven awhile and is only noticeable at ~30MPH. i swore it was coming from somewhere inside the car, but now am convinced it is from the engine.
of course i can't recreate at the dealer, because by the time i get there the car is warm.
is this most likely the camshaft issue??
thanks!

What motor do you have?
My M156 was ticking and dealer ended up replacing the lifters and the intermittent sound is apparently gone now. Take it in for service.

Does is vary with speed, or Rpms?
Is it a ticking or rattle?
Have you checked the tires for stones embedded in tread!

Be aware, these engines are not the most quiet engines, can you shoot a video or sound track of the noise. My engine makes some noise but it's normal, I was concerned at first too. There are other strange noises right after starting to drive the car, pumps going on and off and that sort of thing. Not the most quiet car around, my Cadillac engine was more quiet than this engine for sure, but the Caddy was junk, these cars are awesome. Very unlikely you have a issue, these engines are inspected and re-inspected when they are built.

My engine ticks a lot, sounds like a sewing machine, two dealers said it was normal unless yours is worse. One of the most noisy engines I've had, but a great motor none the less, nothing like Lexus quiet though, if your coming from a Lexus or Honda can see why you'd be nervous.

this doesnt seem like "normal" engine noise
we'll see what the dealer says
i havent been thrilled with the service dept so i wanted to arm myself with at least some knowledge
thanks for the replies so far folks!

So over the past year a 2014 e63 member who had ticking had some gravel get caught in the front axles, some have reported tensioner pulley excessive noise and of fixed by dealer seems to come back, some have had stones in tires, there are shudders and vibes in the driveline that is normal particularly in Eco but only at low speeds ... Hope you get it sorted out.
am i right to be disappointed with the build quality or is this the new normal?

The following will narrow down what the problem is:
You say it happens around 30 mph. Well, you have paddles to change gears while remaing at 30 mph. Down shift for higher rpms while holding the same 30mph. If sound does not change in pitch you can pretty much rule out the engine and lifters and such.
If the sound remains the same when shifting gears it is something else that is not likely engine or trans. Could be gravel in an axle as was mentioned, but this sounds a bit more rare than likely. I would then look at a bad wheel balance somehere first that "excites" the resonance that creates the sound, or it will be drive shaft or differential related.
The really good news is that it is brand new. You will get it fixed at no cost to you for sure.
Best of luck!

so i tried driving in manual mode this am on the way to the dealer. couldnt hear any ticking in 1st because the overall engine noise was very loud. could hear it in 2nd and 3rd.
when i dropped it off, i spoke to the shop foreman. he said the ticking might be the purge valve? not sure this makes much sense since i only hear it when the engine isn't warm and at 30MPH.
i have 2 sets of wheels and i can hear the ticking on both sets so i don't think is the tire balance.

might be something in the suspension. I would have them look at:
Control arms
Ball joints
Upper/lower tie rods
Sway bar bushings
End links
given your car is brand new, it shouldn't be these issues, since they are wear and tear items...

That was kinda what I thought, the purge valves in these motors do make some noise that is different sounding from most other cars. If it really bothers you request that they replace it, they could verify the noise in infact the purge valve by simply disconnecting it and then listening, although this should be done at the dealer as it will trip a check engine light with a code 443. Sometimes replacing the valve does the trick as you get some valves that are louder than others due to varying tolerances when produced. I have heard of people putting a/c insulation around the purge valve and having that helping, but you should try to work with the dealer first on this issue, after all you paid big bucks for the car.

not sure i buy it...i haven't had the best experience with this dealer's service dept (long story, but they managed to scratch 8 rims...2 sets of wheels!)
this was the dealer i purchased from so i assumed i would get better service. there is a dealer right down the street from my office. thinking of giving them a shot.
this is all quite annoying!

i can't seem to recreate it at the dealer either. really frustrating.

Just jumping in on this thread. I've had my 14 E63 since June 15. Since I got it it has also had the ticking. Seems to be in the 25-40mph range. They originally did the chain tensioner which just did the start up tick. Then they replaced pads and rotors. The car has been in a total of 54 days in 7 months.
Their last suggest was they were submitting it to AMG for a response. I'm submitting the car for lemon law. Besides the ticking, the panoramic roof shade was an issue 4 times as well as the drivers side front window. Love the car, but at $100k I find all these issues to be unacceptable.
