DIY removal of w212 e63 trunk chrome molding
decided to do a quick DIY for the chrome trim piece on the trunk above the licence plate area since I couldnt find one online when i wanted to plasti-dip the emblems and chrome trim on my trunk....
I first tried painting it while it was on the car by taping it off but it just didnt come out as good as i wanted it to, so decided to take it off and get a more professional looking end result.
pretty easy to get off once I figured out what was clipped on, what was glued on and what was held on by trunk lock handle mechanism.
- first remove trim tabs in trunk to remove plastic piece shown (then give it a hard pull and it will pop off) and then remove tabs in the trunk liner
when removing the liner you will need to unclip 3 electrical connection shown below (one on the liner and 2 on the plastic piece)
- next you will need to remove this piece below from above the license plate... it was the trickest as there is a piece inside the trunk the holds the trunk unlock handle in.
to access the piece the holds the handle in you need to get at it from inside the trunk... here it is...
first remgve the electrical connector to the trunk handle inside the trunk and pull this clip down and it will release the trunk handle
here it is will the clip removed and here is what the clip looks like
now you can pull the black plastic assemble out... all thats holding it on now are a few push in clips (in pic i have the clip showing as well)
now that you have it off it should look like this and now you can start removing the chrome piece
to remove the chrome piece you need to get out a razor (exacto pen razor works good) and lift up the chrome at one end and start cutting the adhesive trim tape as seen below
there are also 5 clips that hold the trim and and they just unsnap
now its off and can be painted.... install is just reversed... I used 3m doubled sided auto tape to remount the chrome piece once i plasti-dipped it.... all done now.... looks much more aggressive with the flat black than the chrome.... probably adds 20hp

Would anyone have link for a wagon? How to take off the inside part so I can get to that chrome part to black out. Don’t want to try to pry it off from the outside and break something.
Thanks in advance.

Good and descriptive, but you are doing it unnecessarily complicated by removing so many parts. I just replaced my chrome trim on the trunk just by pulling down the piece above the license plate a bit and then you can access the clips to remove the chrome trim. It sits in place with double sided adhesive tape and the clips.
Best regards,
Carl
