Girodisc Rotors,

Girodisc Rotors,
I just had Girodisc rotors and Magic Pads installed on all four corners of my E6.3, W212 from 2012. The car has under 29.000 miles and it was perfect before installation. Now the front right rotor/pads makes a loud , disturbing knocking sound when breaking which is very upsetting. On the phone at least 3 times with Mike Owen from Girodisc today my mechanic was trying to find a solution. At the end of the day after re-doing the front right a second time just to make sure that nothing is loose the noise is still there. Out of ideas my mechanic asked me to drive the car for a couple of days hoping that the pads are going to set in and the noise might go away...
Anybody had issues like this with Girodiscs? Did I make a mistake and I should have ordered the Mercedes rotors ?

Sounds like something loose on the install....i am struggling to see how it could be the pads or discs.
Give it a good once over and check al the bolts etc

The bolts holding the rotors to the hat are not to be touched according to Girodisc- We will start taking everything apart on Mon. and then move pads from left to right to see if we can move the sound from the front right corner to the left. It is very frustrating and when my car is not OK I am in pain.

End of story
I took the car back and left it with my mechanic. He moved the right front rotor to the left and the left to the right and the noise is gone. Mike from Girodisc thinks that this is proof that something was installed wrong the first time and right this time because dimensionally the rotors are identical and that I should leave them the way they are. My mechanic states that that the install was perfect and that something was wrong with the rotors and if Girodisc is willing to replace them under warranty he is ready to replace them.
I am leaving all the way it is -the car drives and stops very well. I could have bought the AMG rotors and pads for $500 less than the Girodisc parts from The Mercedes Benz Superstore -let's see if this will last as long as the OM (30000miles) and if I will be able to keep the hat and change the rotors when the time cames. Does the car feel lighter? I think so...Does it brake better? Not sure.It bother me mentally that the vanes are pointing in the wrong direction in the front but of course you can barelly see it. The difference in cooling is not that much according to Mike Owen from Girodisc.

I have them on the fronts and had no issues. Definately install problem, but I also second that the rotor to hat bolts are the only things I could see that would cause a knocking under braking. That or a loose caliper or incorrectly installed and loose pad

Bolts holding rotors to hats
Please keep in mind that Girodisc is stating that you should not touch the bolts holding the rotors to the hat -my mechanic who does not take a few seconds to read instructions was ready to start tightening the bolts. I had to stop him because than I will be the one blamed for not following instructions. Yes I assume that something was installed wrongly even thou I was there and they check-ed and re-check-ed everything.

Not sure -you can find out more from the manufacturer's web site: www.girodisc.com. The only thing I can tell you is that here in US you can go with the OM Parts/Mercedes AMG or Girodisc which seems to be involved in racing. Before I ordered I asked other members and generally the responses were positive. In my case on an E6.3 W212 I did not save any money but I spent more in the hope that I get better parts. Time will tell.My experience with having the Girodiscs rotors and pads installed was very traumatic because something went wrong and everyone was blaming the other and I was in the middle. That is why at this time I can not enthusiastically recomend the Girodiscs. If I would have taken the car to the dealer if something went wrong it will not be my problem: I will have a loner car to drive till the issue was resolved with no stress or agravation.

Never mind,,
While the issue gone when you moved Right Rotor to the Left,
i think one or more of the lug bolts NOT been at the center of the Rotor bolt hole,
that could cause little bit bend in the Rotor Hat..!,
then when you press brake, pad not equally touch the Rotor face,
that will cause some noise with little vibration, this vibration mostly NOT noticeable..!!

Girodisc Magic Pads
I personally use the front and rear Girodisc rotors slotted and cross drilled with the Girodisc Magic Pads- I did not hear any anwanted noise. As far as dust brake is concerned it is too early to compare with the OM pads.

bolts holding rotors to hats
Of course when you are going to replace the rotors you will have to unscrew the bolts and then tight them to whatever torque Girodisc recommends. What they say is that when you get the first rotor /hat combo the bolts are torqued to specs and to play with them is a mistake. So I had to stop my mechanic from touching the bolts and had to read him that portion of the instructions. You can thight them more but then they will not be floating rotors anymore.

as long as you set your torque wrench to correct spec, its not going to overtighten them but would find if a bolt is loose due to defect from manufacturer

This is true but I did not have the specs. -I would have had to call Mike Owen from Girodisc - In their instructions they are claiming that the bolts are torqued correctly at the factory. My mechanic would have spent hours looking for non-existent mistakes and I would have been billed for all that time instead of looking at what he did and spending a few minutes at the begining reading the instructions would have been so much better.
