And does not work on the 15-16 models based on the vin number for both of my wagons in the USA....

Sorry, I did read every post but am still looking for the best way to execute this "upgrade." I have a 2016 e63 (manufactured 8/2015)

Please tell me if I have this right... If my main unit looks like the picture of the "NTG5.x main unit" in the Original post AND i get my USB connector changed to UNIT 172-820-20-00-80 then I can ask the dealer to upgrade command firmware and it should work? Not sure if it matters buy my command knob only has 2 buttons, one on either side. Currently my usb accepts audio, but I have no option for carplay/android auto/mirrorlink. Is there anyone in the Northeast who has been able to pull this off?

I'm not an expert on this, but my understanding is the same as yours. They have not gotten the MBrace internet connection to work on my 2016 so the MBrace advanced phone support told me to go get the Command software updated by the dealer to fix the issue. After I get that done, I'm hoping that just changing the USB connector will enable Carplay! I really don't care so much about the MBrace, but if I can get a free software update because of it, I'll take it! I'll definitely post here after I get it all done whether it works or not.

 

does anyone think this will work to enable carplay/android play. The seller on ebay says it will, sold 120 of them and has lots of positive feedback... If anyone has any experience with this, appreciate any reply.

I just contacted the seller on eBay and gave him the VIN of my 2016 E63, he confirmed it will work. So I placed my order, if it doesn't work he will refund me. So I will let you know how it goes.

 

I ended up going for it also, he seems to be confident after checking my VIN that it will work for my car and will accept returns (with me paying shipping).... lots of people left him positive feedback on this item, i guess ill report back also. He also thinks that it can be reversed with the same process, so I'm hoping it will leave warranty intact if reversed before bringing it in for service.

 

I can confirm that the above ebay option works for CarPlay in the US. I ordered earlier in the week and tried it out today. Please note that you might need to plug the module in twice. The first time will state something along the lines of CarPlay >1 and will like nothing has changed. Upon plugging it in the second time you will get a CarPlay Activation Successful message.

This was done on a 2016 E63 S with a March 2015 build date. You can also return it to stock settings by plugging in the module again and you will receive a "Returned to Factory" message.

I can confirm that the Android Auto option is displayed as available, but cannot confirm actual functionality as I do not have an Android Device. I will let someone else chime in on that piece.

 

Does anyone have a surefire way to coax the dealer to update the comand firmware? They are insistent that there is no update available though the ebay seller and other mbworld members are certain there is. Needless to say the odb tool wont work util after I update. Honestly, I would even be willing to go to any third party to do this update for me. Should I fabricate complaints for Mbrace support in order to make the dealer to do an update?

The difference will be that when you want to deactivate it before a trip to the dealer, it will flash the message "Factor Settings Successful"

 

after a lengthy conversation with the service manager at the stealership, the comand upgrade actually happened. Afterwards the upgrade was simple and works for BOTH carplay and android auto. Waze on the dash works well so far. Calling siri/google assistant from the steering wheel is also functional.

The ebay seller was very helpful and I strongly recommend this option for folks who are interested in activating this hidden feature of our cars.

 

I finally got the dealership to update the Comand unit after showing them the screenshot from Vlad (Seller of this unit) that I had issues with the old software, after the update I was able to successfully install the Carplay feature, it works great! Soo happy and I would recommend it for your E63

 

One more happy customer here. Did the update tonight and it works well. (2016 E63S Wagon) Thanks to the guinea pigs that took the plunge first.

 

Bumping this, trying to figure out exactly what I need, my dealer is less than helpful.

Did you guys that had success, in particular with android auto, have to upgrade the usb block in the center console with the MB Retrofit kit (PN: A2468203800), and did you have to buy an MB specific micro-usb cable ( PN:A2228204415) or will any data cable work?

Edit: the retrofit kit comes with both a lightning cable, and a micro USB according to the press release.

If I buy the OBD activation tool for car play linked above, do I need to change out my USBs for the one with "phone" picture on USB2?

If coding with STAR, will I need to to change the 2 USB plugs? or should it theoretically be the same as buying the USB module?

 

 

Thanks for keeping up with this. Dropping the car for a speaker replacement in the next day or 2, and hopefully a firmware update if the dealer cooperates. Will report back!

Edit: interesting piece of info for the people looking to do this upgrade, I found a Mercedes Individual release listing the carplay retrofit and the vehicles it works with. Specifically, NOT the 212 E series. I wonder why? Clearly it works?
