I'm in Chicago too and I've seen the car take 20 min to get To temp while in this frigid winter

High 30* temps overnight, car was parked outside, 55* upon start up...took exactly 10 mins to get to 175* and another two minutes to get up to it's 200* normal.

It can be 75 degrees here and my car will take twice as long to reach those temps.......

Next week I will actually time it, but I know how long it takes to get to work and about where on my route it gets to 175....about 20ish mins...but I will measure and report back.

I really can't comment on how long my other cars have taken to warm up. This is my first car with an oil temp gauge. Every other car I've owned had only a coolant temp. gauge - and the coolant warms up within 3 minutes of driving.

for oil on these cars, its normal... my E63, GL63 and S63 coupe all do the same thing.. coolant gets up there quick, oil takes long.

Read the manual: Cold start and even in S+ your E63 starts in 2nd gear to minimize engine racing. I've had a few cars with high HP/displacement and never seen the engine oil heat up in 5min... my '14 has always been consistent in mild temps, and now with winter upon us in the Northeast it takes a bit longer...

Be kind to the engine.

so your saying basically not to accelerate hard until oil temps reach the white range?

It's all about how cold the oil is and how hard your drive no the car...

The last few mornings, when I've pulled out of the garage, the oil has read~-3C. Would it be wise for me to pull away from my first few stop signs at WOT? Probably not.
Would it hurt to accelerate into the highway at 50% throttle (which is still quite fun in these cars), once I got there after a few minutes of driving, and Ben though my oil temp would still be <10C? I doubt it.

I gathered some data today....

Ambient temp = 37

Start oil temp = 57
Time to 175 = 20 minutes (city driving)

FYI

My 2014 CLS63 warmed up fairly quickly, but my 2015 E63 seems to take forever. It's a bit irritating as I only drive 4-6 miles a day and rarely get my car up to temp.

My previous car was a 2014 M5, also TT V8, and it seemed pretty slow as well although the temp gauge was analog.

My NA cars, including an M156 motor, did seem to heat up quicker. Fastest was an RS5. It was 5 minutes.

I normally start off in comfort mode. Would starting off in S+ mode make it heat up faster since we are using lower gears and higher RPM's?
I also have a 2014 E63s, and it takes about 20 -23 minutes to get above 175.

I can deal with the oil temp timing....but what is up with these heated seats? It seems that they take forever to get hot! And then once they do get hot the start backing down off the three red dot mark. Dare I say that I miss the heated steering wheel of cars past....

Here in Atlanta, the heated seats aren't as crucial as snowy climates - but I do see your point.

The seats in my '11 E350 got HOT and very quickly (seats were MB tex.) I think the AMG seats with additional bolstering, padding and leather mask the intensity.

I'll wager the part number for the seat heaters is the same, unless they are an integrated unit with the cooling function.

see this is what makes no sense. Both cars are facelift models and one warms up quick and one takes forever.

What is up with this inconsistency?

As I said my dealer put four thermostats in that would work for a while then go back to the same deal, then they talk to the people out at Laguna Seca, AMG class was running and they said all the cars do that so at that point they said it was normal, when we talk to engineers they said it wasn't normal, Mercedes engineers. I am going to try tomorrow to do my modification I will let you know . The big problem I have is I go to the high Sierras, extremely cold and wet oil temperature will drop coming down the hill, there is eight 212° thermostat so it should stay at 212 or so . I did see one of these motors completely apart at 120,000 miles it looks very good but the point is oil is always supposed to be hot, 212 is the boiling point of water at sea level that's where you want your oil . It needs to boil out all the contaminants going to the vapor system and Brunt. The factory probably doesn't want to deal with the problem because it's going to be very expensive I will post my conclusions on my modification of the thermostat system, have a very merry Christmas !

you can ask your tuner for changing the maps for oil cooling and pressure to heat faster or cooler.

also AMG knows about this and can change the map for oil cooling.

so, just bug the dealer that you need a new tune to address this issue and AMG can do it.

My insurance agent just called and advised I'm being dropped from their coverage after reading this thread.

They stated M157 powered cars are no longer eligible for coverage until this gets sorted!
