Base vs Performance vs S drive qualty? Difference?

hey guys i have a 2012 cls63 performance package and the ride in ny is horrible my question is this

is a 2014 cls63s just as rough as a 2012 cls63 performance package?

what other differences are there other then the s being awd?

I am assuming this is same for the e63

I cant find it right now but there is a car and driver article that said that the 14+ E did in fact ride significantly better than the previous models.

Personally, on mine I found that in comfort mode (while it raises the back too high making it look ugly) it rides pretty smooth and absorbs most bumps well.

On sport ride quality is still decent, and sport+ it's very harsh.

Overall i I feel they could of done better in the ride quality but it should at least be an improvement from pre-facelift models.

if you are rating your current car as horrible, the 2014 will not be worth the upgrade cost. Would Definitely drive a 2014 and see how you like it

i also read somewhere that cls and E don't share same suspension and E is supposed to be a bit smoother.

Best thing to do is drive the exact model car your looking at to get your answer.

Agreed.

That said, the Comfort mode is still more sporty than the E350 Sport my wagon replaced and the Sport mode is nice but the Sport+ is bouncy on anything but smooth pavement. This is wagon, not sure if sedan is different.

thats for sure, the e63 will never be as comfortable as a regular E class even in comfort mode.

I guess thats to be expected considering how much better he car handles, and the low profile rims/tires.

Would you say comfort mode feels close or significantly more harsh than the e350 sport?

I would use the term "sporty" rather than harsh. Harsh to me implies unrefined - AMGs are far from unrefined.

As you pointed out, lower profile tires, more performance-tuned suspension have impact as well. Also, the seats are more firm.

To answer your question more pointedly, I submit the following:

E350 Sport - Not real firm, but not sloppy either
E63S Wagon
Comfort Mode: 30-40% more firm than E350
Sport: 55-60% more firm than E350
Sport+: 80% more firm than E350

Just my impressions - YMMV

My dad has 2016 e350 sport and it's soft and quiet and easily more supple than my 63 in comfort

one thing to also keep in mind, I read that all w212 e class cars with facelift, 14+ have received improved suspension tuning for both handling and ride comfort including the AMGs

my friend also jumped from a 2012 e550 to a 2014 e550 and said ride quality was vastly improved.

So in your comparison above, which year e350 are you comparing to which year e63 wagon?

i agree with the sport being a better description, I was saying harsh meaning the same thing just different word. Definitely far from unrefined.

interresting. So compared to a 2014 e350 the 14+ E63 even in comfort mode would be significantly more sporty ride as peter mentioned above.

This is the compromise we must make for good handling.

I find the suspension with these cars a bit unrefined and choppy in the first few millimeters of travel.
Past that, it's sporty and even gains back some refinement.

I like it best on just regular sport mode. I find it gives the car a good balance of staying mostly comfortable and handling real well at the same time, and lowers the back just enough to keep it looking sharp.

..I too tend to put sport mode on as it is firm and supple enough to enjoy!
Sport plus needs nice flat tarmac.

We own both an 2014 E250 and 2015 E63S. The suspension on the E63 is noticeably stiffer, though not uncomfortable. The E250 will glide over bumps and pavement irregularities. You definitely notice them in the E63.

yup this makes sense. Always a trade off worth paying for the much improved handling.

For the times needed, I find comfort mode to work rather well and passengers never complained even on bad city roads.

I had a 12 E63 PP and now have a 14 E63 and the 14 rides and drives much tighter, smoother and better than the 12 did.

You gotta love subjectivity, right? I rode with the 2014 E63 in comfort mode and thought "wow, this is PLUSH". I put it in Sport plus and go "meh, that works for 90% of my driving". So now I just always leave it on the stiffest because I'm used to driving sports cars.

What's plush to me might be totally unacceptable to the driver of an S class.

Go test drive and avoid anything with 20's I would say Sidewall makes such a huge difference.
