Hi, yesterday my check brake wear warning came on. I called the dealer and they said it's a $4,100.00 maintenance cost. Oh, plus tax of course... LOL...
Seems a bit excessive, no?

sounds like the dealer is juicing the quote a bit. My 2016 E63 wagon had the front brakes done recently, $3,200 at the dealer. I need to get the rears done, again, and am switching over to Rado pads.

A related question please. Typically pads replacement is a simple procedure. I have the driver assist and distronic package. Does that mean that the pistons can only be released with a special scanner?

If you like oem, I certainly understand that. If open to other and better options, you can go full rotor/pad replacement for under 3k installed.

 

It should be pads/rotors for 4K.
ceramic pads front rear are only 600$. Normal way cheaper.

 

Depending on how many miles are on the car you can get away with just doing the pads. You can go Original or EBC Redstuff...I got the EBC Redstuff pads paid less than 300 shipped and they work amazing the grip is insane and less dust


My car had 23k miles on it and the Rotors were still within spec to not replace them according to the MB Dealer here in Boise ID

Did both front and rear rotors going with the Girodisc two piece rotors and Porter field pads for under $4k. The OEM are the worst for brake dust...worth exploring options just to reduce the dust!

 

We have Girodisc rotors and RADO pads in stock right now. The RADO pads are currently on sale right now too.

A $4,100 quote for front pads only is disturbing. Retail for OEM front rotors are $1k apiece. Add in pads, labor, brake fluid you still wouldn't be $4,100.

If you feel comfortable doing the work yourself (and it's really a no-brainer on opposed-piston brakes), you can get front pads and rotors for ~$1,800. Rear pads and rotors are ~$550.

I just did front and rear pads on my 2012 E63 wagon. Did it myself and re-cleared the calipers at same time. Total cost about $350. OEM pads front and textar rear. Textar is OE supplier.

I think the W211's required some magic dance, opening and closing doors, and disconnecting fuses or something.

 

The magic dance on the W211 was just because it had SBC brakes which was brake by wire. That only applied to the 2003-2006 models, then they got rid of SBC in 2007-2009 so it no longer applied and it was normal.

As you go up the line from E350 to E550 to E63, it looks like they made things more complex going from single piston to dual to I'm not sure what on the E63, 4 or 6 piston calipers? That's why the cost keeps going up. Looks like they kept the same pad wear sensor though on all the cars.

 

I only asked about the brake piston release because my location mechanic said that because of the driver assist option I have, my brakes are controlled electrically and can only be pushed back once released via a scanner code or something along those lines.
There are 6 pistons for the front and 4 in the rear on my wagon, sure it's the same on the sedans. .
I also have a 2006 E500 4Matic Wagon which I love for the incredible smooth ride and performance in snow. It also has some sweet convenience features my e63 doesn't come close to. Forget the e63 wagon in snow, no matter what tires are on it.
Incidentally, whereas typically wear sensors are only on the passenger side, I was told the E500 has one per side in front and one in the rear. Is that true?

 

So I guess my question about releasing/disableling the brakes was actually required for the E500. In that case I think there's a procedure to disable the SBC without the STAR Diagnostic.

 

Can you please give me a price breakdown for all four rotors and rado pads? Let me know if you need anything else.

Front Rotors are $1050/pair
Replacement rotors when they wear out are $700/pair
Rear Rotors are $1300/pair
Replacement rotors when they wear out are $570/pair
Front Pads are $495
Rear Pads are $395

The front pads are on back order currently, we had a surprisingly big order come in and wipe my inventory out last week, some more are being manufactured right now.

 

Why do pads cost more than Genuine MB pads?

 

Thank you for the quote. Why are the rear rotors more than the front? The fronts are typically way more expensive doing my research. When do you expect the pads in?

 

The hat in the rear is more expensive because of the E-brake. The replacement rotor rings are cheaper in the rear but the initial cost for the rear is more expensive because of the aluminum hat. The ads should be bad in stock in about 3 weeks.

 

They cost more because these pads are made by Project My in Japan and use some very high quality materials. Mercedes pads use much less costly materials than the pads that we are selling.
