What does the "Check Engine Oil Level At Next Refueling" mean?
Hey guys,
My M156 E63 gave me a warning for oil today, add it to the list of problems in the past week.
I got a warning saying "Check Engine Oil Level At Next Refuelling"...
I just can't seem to read the dipstick even when I wipe and reinsert. I wish these would have the electronic one as well on the cluster.
If the oil level was dangerously low would a different alert come on or would that one come on?
I don't want to blow the motor or do significant damage but I'm honestly not sure how to read the dipstick. It keeps getting covered all over in oil.
I read it at lower than the 2 markers close to each other but that can't be right because that would mean it's severely low??
Wouldn't the car give me a proper alert if the car was dangerously low on oil?

I wonder if I've damaged the engine. Before that warning I was constantly on WOT. Why would the car not give a proper warning. The W211 used to tell you to add X amount of oil. Are you saying this thing might have been severely low in oil...?

The motor will be fine unless you hear some really weird knocking noise.
The W212 however uses different verbiage. Doesn't mean you didn't have any oil. Just check dipstick and look for the top of where the oil is solid and not splattered.
Add 1/2L at a time and you'll be fine.

severely low? No. Keep in mind that these motors hold a lot of oil, over 9 quarts. You could be off the dipstick by a few quarts and it’s no big deal. AMG engines can consume 1 qt or more per 1k miles, more if you are driving it hard. Porsche is worse, my GTS has an info display for oil level that I am supposed to check every time I fill it up, according to the user manual.
