Depends on what is owed on the car, but if it was me I would not have let them touch it, and find out what the insurance co would sell the car back to me for, if the number was right I'd take the 31k and buy in back and fix it. You say 4k plus for a crankshaft for it? There is a top racing crank shaft manufacture that could likely make a top quality one for less if not it is still possibly reusable, special bearings would be needed that likely MB doesn't have. I'm guessing the cost to fix reusing the fixed crankshaft would be under 5K not including the reinstall in the car.

My 2011 has been sitting for about a week and there is a noticeable tapping noise that I have not heard before.
Could the cause simply be that the oil has had time to drain down and a drive will make it go away? No oil loss since the last change.
Will an oil additive or thicker oil help with the tapping noise or is this a problem that needs attention?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
