how many miles before brake replacement . . .
Curious how many miles people usually get on a set of brakes. . . . I had the pads/rotors replaced in January with factory parts and drove about 11,000 miles since. Car is being serviced right now and tech told me I'm about 5,000 away from new brakes . . . Would also love to learn about less-dust options . . .

What type of driving are you subjecting the car to? Taking it to the track at all?
I only have 10k miles on my brake pads and they look new (both F&R), all regular city/highway driving. No time at the track.

no time on the track, just occasional spirited driving in my area when possible. other than that just regular driving. I'm probably looking at about 16,000 miles for the last set I had installed . . . no overly worried, just mostly curious whether they should last longer or not. Maybe an indicator of a different problem? Maybe its just how I drive . . .

There is a driving technique between smashing the gas pedal to the floor and smashing the brake pedal to the floor. It is called “coasting”.
You might try it out !

The rears will go faster than the fronts ... I have 30,000 original miles on my 2014 and I bought it new ... won't need brakes till this summer
I drive it very chill... daily driver and lots of highway

No brake data on my 2015 yet. My 2011 had 31k miles when I bought it and it had all new brakes at that time. So original owner went right through them. I then put on another 33k. When inspected, they were nowhere close to needing replacement. As a different data point, I got 90k+ miles twice out of 2 sets of breaks on my 2000 E55. My SA could not believe it. It really comes down to driving style. I also use a lot of engine breaking with the paddles. And NO, it does not wear out my transmission. Never a trans problem on any of the 3 AMG's.
That's all I got.
Cheers

on my W212 I had pads replaced just before I bought it around 21-22k , and at 42k I had to do pads again and new rotors.
OEM materials and labor for pads and rotors alone ran me close to $3500 (at a independent), not sure about just the pads as they were replaced right before I got into my 212.
definitely has to do with how you drive it.

My dumb question - Is it typical to replace brakes only when that break wear sensor / light goes off? Not sure at what wear level that sensor is supposed to go off at, which I asked my dealer about and never got a straight answer on. Of course he wants me to get new pads / rotors on all 4 corners for 5500 but won’t clarify if they have 5% life remaining or 25%

Mine is almost at 24k miles. Dealer service said I need new pads soon. I bought Red Stop pads already and will do it myself when the indicator light comes on or I’m bored. The rears are visually thinner than than the fronts.
My 2001 E430 needed new pads and tires every 12k mikes. Probably driver related problem but pads were cheap and I could do the job myself in an hour for all 4 corners.

Taphil - am assuming its safe to wait until the brake wear light comes on before having to change the brakes? Dealers been pressuring me to change mine which were done at 12k and i'm at 30k and stopping power is fine. i realize my pads and rotors arent new, but seems foolish to let the dealer change them at 15-20% life remaining if the brake wear light isnt on???
waiting further could damage the sensor at worst ... less likely to hurt the caliper ... sensors are relatively inexpensive and often will be replaced anyway it seems
hey do you have an Indy in chi town that'll replace my brakes? Ams wants $300 an axle ...

On my old E55, the dealer started telling me that I was up for brakes at 30k miles. I looked at them and basically said "bs". My brake light did not come on until almost 91k miles!! As I mentioned eariler, I got 90+ out of two sets of brakes on that car.
I would never concern myself about brakes no matter what the dealer says until that light comes on at least. When the pads wear enough for that little clip to close the circuit and turn it on, you still likely have at least 1000 more miles before real worries. So my recommendation is to wait until you see the light, and then schedule your replacements/service.

i have 5-10% left and I'm totally comfortable waiting

i do have a exceptional indy guy who's currently a mb master tech at dealer and helps me out with stuff that he can do out of his garage where he has a lift.... he'll do my labor on brakes so I just need to decide on OEM, Girodisc, or Big Brake kit to buy and bring those parts to him.

Yeah there’s definitely some pad left when the brake pad sensor light goes off. The sensor is cheap and replaceable if needed, it’s just a piece of wire covered in plastic that gets ground down as it hits rotor and closes the circuit way before the base plate of the pad does.

If you need to replace your pads and rotors there are other options available outside of OEM for a lot less $$ and with better quality.

Here's another question for you guys: I know the rear rotors have minimum specs of 24mm but my car is in the shop right now and I want to get a move on ordering parts. Assuming the rotors are smooth, have you guys reused them with another set of pads or were they worn too close to the minimum specs when the original pads needed to be replaced? No plans to machine them.
