If you have the updated chain I would think you would already have the check valve. Might be wrong. You would know though just by looking at the chain tensioner part number if you were to open the timing cover.

Sorry guys. no new updates. Car has been chilling in my garage its killing me I wish I could drive it. Haven't gotten around to getting it fixed yet. I have my doubts about having chain stretch. I think its a bad camshaft adjuster since the only fault code is p001885 People have told me theres a way to test it in xentry to see if the adjuster is bad. I was a little irritated because none of the 3-4 shops I've been to mentioned that or even thought to try it. However, even if it is a bad adjuster. I have the old timing chain and tensioners so It would be dumb not to change all of that at once along with the adjuster. So I am going to do the whole job. I contemplated doing it myself. Probably wont. Rather get it done professionally. For now it'll have to wait, have some other pressing issues to deal with. I'm sourcing all the parts online and I told the mechanic I will let him know when I'm ready to have the job done.

Just last night I took a photo of my timing chain on my 2012 CLS63 M157. Is it the latest one?

I have 2012 E63 AMG with AMG sport package and I have the updated chain how do u know if u have the new tensioners and added check valve? I'm assuming my chain was replaced under warranty prior to me getting it.

2012 ML63 AMG, 2015 RAM 2500, 1968 Charger
Hello gents, wondering if there’s any way to verify the check valves and updated tensioners have been installed without pulling the adjuster covers? I have a new to me 2012 ML63 AMG that I love but was unaware of these issues when I purchased it, shame on me for not doing more research. It appears that I have the older style chains, but I do not experience any cold start rattle and what I consider “normal” valve train noise at any temperature that does not seem to dramatically change with RPM or temperature. The car has 70k miles on the odometer. Thoughts??? I appreciate any feedback you may be able to provide. Thanks!

I didn't see a direct comparison in the thread, so below are images showing both chains. I used the image from @CLS63amgs and one from the video.

I have the newer chain and tensioners but no check valves. I was getting the rattle for about 2 years on cold start and warm start for roughly 3-5 seconds. Just installed the FCP euro kit with check valves and tensioners and no more timing chain rattle. I would definitely recommend doing it for piece of mind especially if you have the old style chain.

do you mind sharing the labor on that install? i was going to go ahead and get the timing chain replaced...preventative maintenance...but they want 40 hrs of labor for it.

Replacing the whole chain is a much bigger job since I already have the new style chain I just had the check valves and tensioners installed. My buddy who’s a tech did it for me I can ask him how long but he had it done in an afternoon.

Yea that’s the kit I had installed on my car. I’m not sure if it will work with the old style chain and tensioners best to verify with fcp euro. But the good thing is the kit comes with both styles of check valves so when you get in there you’ll see which ones will work.

Cls63 2011 rattle on startup

I seem to be having the same problem with my startups, even on a hot Engine startup. I’m not sure if its the chain? I hear a loud rattling noise on 3/5 startups daily. I’ve recently done an Oil change MB 229.5. However, this hasn’t seemed to fix the problem?

I'm pretty sure that thing is on a CAN bus and you should be able to test it, I'd have to hook upto a car and see what I can do.

This alone COULD be your problem... Has your tech tried testing it with no luck?
Hey,

what do you mean could be the issue?
The camshaft adjuster mechanism itself
or the solenoid-magnet?

I had code P001685 on mine.
Have replaced the camshaft adjuster (old one was definitely worn out), have replaced new tensioners and installed check valves.
I kept my old chains, as they are barely stretched (tensioner is out just a few millimeters).

But I still got the code P001685 present and it comes up every time I clear the codes...
Could it be a faulty magnet?

Thx
Rod

Mine is 2013 model and has the updated chain. So the only way to check if it already has the check valve is to open the timing cover?

The dealer replaced the tensioners and added the check valves at about 22k miles per the service bulletin.
How did you know that your car has no check valve?
