Switch to winters time

For us in the north, it's just about winter wheels time.
Ever since the michelin pilot alpins, I honestly don't feel theres that much of a sacrifice anymore. It's absolutely incredible.
It's also a good chance to take off the summers and clean everything because holy brakedust. I joke that somewhere under there, there's a wheel. I find off the shelf Vim to work very very well. Cuts through and clean just after a few wipes.
On a subjective note, I use the pre-facelift 19" e63 oem wheels as winters and they're significantly heavier than my oem summers even though they're both forged construction. Doubt tires would make that much difference, 295/30 vs 275/40 rears.
After a morning of interior cleaning - 9:1 distilled water and rubbing alcohol and subsequent leather conditioner and wheel cleaning/swapping a nice moment in the sauna for the back/neck and it's football time!

Yup. I live in Jackson Wyoming and just got my Alpin's on. This is my first winter with this '14 E63s Wagon so we'll see how it does. That front is awfully low. May be I'll just start a plowing company. LOL

Up in eastern ontario canada. it's been a very pleasant fall thus far. that'll change abruptly mid week with rain mixed with snow on the way!
rlevy, your wagon will power through anything. With the alpins on one trip I went through all the following;
-20C, snow, blizzard, fresh snow, packed snow, freezing rain, ice pellets. The car with the alpins handled it like nothing else.

If you get two sets of OEM fronts, that'll work and will have the same outside spacing on the rear. If you get aftermarket with 255 square setup, just make sure they're the same offset (32) or as close as possible, erring on the side of a smaller offset to prevent the wheels from being too "sunken in."

Edit: Also, FWIW, I'm running the same staggered OEM setup (F:255, R:285) for winters and it's great.

I think it makes little difference with either square or staggered. At least to me in the conditions where I am.
SLe - your car will also accept 18" rims and it'll clear the brakes no problem. I had 18"s for winters on my previous E63 to fit tires with taller sidewalls. Used 255/40/18, square setup, OEM 18" rims.
On the 16 wagon I am using a staggered setup due to tire availability when I first got it - 245/40/19 and 275/35/19 Pilot Alpin 5's. I like to go one size narrow and one size taller.
Samz: Edmonton?

Did the same wheel set up, and tire size except with Nokian R3s.

Amazing setup.

It’ll make a very small difference running 255/35/19 on your staggered stock wheels.
I was about to run 255/35/19 on all 4 corners on my 14 but found a set of new 285/30 245/35 for 800 bucks. Couldn’t say no.
Yessir, I’m commute between Edmonton an Fort Mcmurray

I have a 2014 E63s wagon. While I still can't attest to the Pilot Alpin's winter snow capability (eventually it always shows up), after a spirited drive that took me over two mountain passes yesterday, I can say that they perform extraordinarily well on dry pavement, better than any snow tire I have ever experienced (and I have tried lots).

Ran the PA4s in 255/35 and 285/30 and it was amazing in Colorado mountains.

I had to put them on in frickin' early-November in STL. This thing is a handful below 30 degrees on summer tires even with the AWD, and then we had a forecast for 10 degrees out and an ice/snow storm, so I pulled the trigger. Was the right call, it was nasty for early Movember in STL

I think the PA4's might have more grip than the almost-dead Conti 5P's on the front of my summer set. Can't wait to not put those on next spring, got my year out of them, time to die MFers. Other than mroe highway noise, the PA4's are almost year-round worthy if you don't mind burning through them fast

The Rial M10's are still a nice looking wheel for a dedicated winter set. Also, pleasant surprise, the car still remembered the TPMS from last time they were on thec ar, didn't even have to do a re-learn

For what it's worth, our square 255/35-19 on 19x8.5 ET32-ish (can't recall what size Tire Rack sells) wheels PA4 set doesn't make the car handle weird. THere is just soooooo much understeer built into the chassis. I have to try really hard to break the rear end loose, TC has to be off, and you have to really ape the steering and throttle. This car gives you the tommy lee jones looking over the top of his glasses in the fugitive look when you try to hustle it in a corner - son just wait until you can see the track-out point and then we can go

like the other owner opinions, I am very very impressed with the michelin alpin's. Such good grip in cold dry and snow/ice/slush/wet, always feels sure footed.

Old thread

There is n old thread on this - see my results:

MB World initial setup

MB world snows discussion - miles later

Only thin to add is that the Replika wheels held up well all season. Hit some potholes and are still straight.

Can I get more pictures of your winter wheel setup please? I would like to know how it truly looks like. It looks like your 245-40-19 and 275-35-19 are looking quite good! My email is wilson6290@gmail.com.

sorry about the late late replies. It's getting cold here now! Below freezing overnights here and there. Only 4~6weeks more and I'll be on winters.
Wilson, there is a post I made here showing clearance. it's close but it's fine. i haven't gotten any marks or scratches in the wheel well liners.
