M157 E63S - Sign of serious problems?

Hi guys,

so here is the deal. Upon changing spark plugs (E63S M157) one of them was missing the ceramic coated protection (see photo) that probably went inside the ignition chamber and might have scratched cylinder walls or done any other sort of damage. As owner is unable to have this checked for another month or so, he just continues to drive the car. He says everything works normal, no rough idle, no decrease of power or increase of oil consumption. So, the question is - should he really worry about this and book the car to conduct a compression test/camera view inside or just forget about it, because there is nothing wrong with the car?

He is running Stage 2 - renntech ecu tune, full exhaust + downpipes.

He is a bit paranoid person - he already imagines this is going to be a serious problem sooner or later and is considering rather getting rid of the car now.

Thanks

Well first question is why did it chip off? did the valve wack it?Why did he replace spark plugs in the first place? From here it looks like carbon buildup on the spark plugs, and that area didnt get any. Hard to say. Would be smart to install a magnetic drain plug for piece of mind as well next time he does this oil change.

He was changing them within a required service interval (60k kilometers - the car is almost “new).

Since he been driving it, hasn't noticed any side effects, it's possible the magnet in the oil pan already caught it. For peace of mind he should check the compression and do a leak down test to be safe, as at this point it's a hit or miss really, not like he caught it at the exact time, and who knows when that might have come off really.

Why would the magnet catch that insulator? It isn't magnetic to my understanding.

Yikes.

Magnet to catch what? Everything but the piston rings and valves in that cylinder is non ferrous. If it damaged a valve you would notice it running poorly. Scope the cylinder for bore score and damage, but more than likely the ceramic has bounced around a few times and exited through the exhaust and is stuck in the first catalytic converter.

Or it went out the exhaust valve and was trapped by the catalyst.

Borescope is the only way to affirmatively determine if the bore or piston surface were scratched.

Given it is a common issue, do you guys know how often it resulted in a major issue?

i don't think it will result in major issues, it will be thrown out instantly from exhaust valve.

Correct, Mercedes changed the plugs or updated them sometime around late 2014 and 2015 to a updated version. These other version either the porcelain break off from the body, or they completely fall into the chamber.

Def camera check for scoring and check compression, unfortunately.

2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ECU dyno tune; EDOK TCU tune; BB intakes; sprintbooster
And this is why tuned engines need every 10,000 miles spark plugs
