There's something about the e55 which made it feel much faster than it actually was. I don't know if it's the torque curve, the transmission, or what. My brother had a modded high-mileage e55 which only trapped low 90s in the 1/8th, but it felt way faster.

I agree whole hearted with you here. Although disclaimer my CLS55 is quite modded. But when I went to test drive the W218 M157 and W212 M157 I to was not blown away at all. It felt refined and less of a monster which was against my expectations. Jumping back into my CLS55 after their test drive sure was fun. I would love to have a ride though in a stage 2 M157 car and see what that difference is like.

I know the E55 M113k motor is pretty bullet-proof, no issues whatsoever except the common Airmatic problem.

Should I sell the E55 and join the Bi-Turbo club? What are your thoughts?

Thanks!
I know I’m late but have both? I could never sell my e55 . It’s a peace of history hand crafted SUPERCHARGED V8 that’s something special. I’m planning on buy a e63 s 2015 you can get one between 30 and 45k they’re pretty affordable

I had an '06 E55 and I think I liked it until I sold it and bought a W210 E55. For some reason, the car seems way more balanced than a W211 E55 which is pretty nose heavy. I then bypassed W211 E55 and bought a '14 E63s which is way different than the previous generation. The sound, the stock power and the balance is way better than any previous generation.
A local friend has a 2005 E55 and honestly I don't really care much for it and when I a modded W210 E55 came available, I bought that instead. I now have 2 W210 E55's and a W212 E63s and I am pretty happy with this combo.

Having driven two E63 W212 version recently as I try and find a new (to me) Merc there is no way I'd buy the Twin Turbo 5.5 over the M156 NA.....the old school motor is is so much more alive alive and instant.....the TT felt more.....erm.... soft....in both its delivery and its tone. Faster but didn't feel faster!. Like having two identical tigers....one wild and fighting to survive....one tame and living in a zoo!!
I'm afraid I've never had the pleasure of piloting an E55 though......

I think stock for stock the NA is always going to feel punchier than a FI motor, even if they make the turbos tiny to minimize lag. I think where the M157 really shines is when it's unleashed with a tune.
