Dump the E55 and go with a W212 E63?
Hello all. I have a 2006 E55 AMG with a Eurocharged stock tune and has about 67k miles on it. Owned it for almost 5 years now and it always puts a smile on my face. Wanted to check with you W212 E63 bi-turbo owners to see how your cars have been treating you. I know the E55 M113k motor is pretty bullet-proof, no issues whatsoever except the common Airmatic problem.
Should I sell the E55 and join the Bi-Turbo club? What are your thoughts?
Thanks!

Depends
I had a 04 e55 with 83mm/ EC headers/tune. for the past 5 years. Loved it. During the corona craze I put all 6 of my cars for sale for what i thought was crazy prices... sold the e55 in 1 day. Instant regret, still regret the sale a few months later.
I purchased my '14 e63 4 months ago and it is quite nice. but it lacks same of the attributes I loved about the m113k. No doubt its faster, but sometimes it does 'feel' as fast. Example, in the e55, if i wanted to pass someone doing 55, if you push the pedal down, it literally felt like i was getting rear ended! Insane punch in the back. In the e63, its quite less dramatic, much smoother. (likely a mix of 55mph is 3rd gear in the 63 vs 2nd in the e55, and turbo spool vs supercharger)
I liked the airmatic in the e55, easier to dial in a ride height plus i liked the rise button for ramps. e63 is odd, the rear goes up and down, but the front are coils.
Looks, always subjective. both are good looking cars, I agree the e55 was getting a bit dated.
E63 headlights are awesome
the trans is great
The sound is awesome,
The launches are insane, I love the AWD
Interior and seats are great
No real issues. I got a 14+ to avoid any possibility of timing chain issues. they do seem to be reliable.

However, If I could go back and not have sold my e55, I would have kept it.
I think you will be pleased with the w212 sound. They have done a good job keeping the sound out of the cabin, but on the outside, they are quiet loud. I am currently messing with my mufflers to get a bit more of a volume bump.
For fun, check out this clip with the exhaust removed lol:

A properly stanced e55 with some tasteful carbon bits has a certain power under elegance look that i appreciated. Would I go back to a e55? no, not for the prices they are pulling now vs the w212, especially considering the price of one as nice as mine was

Some good thoughts already posted (especially the difference in headlights). I had a 2006 E55 that I sold with 170k miles. I drove that car roundtrip NC to California. Wish I had never sold it.
After missing it for three years, I bought a 2012 E63 with only 55k miles. Beautiful Carfax proved low mileage and all annual services at a dealer.
The E63 has been my daily driver for over a year. It's a nice car, but it does not feel the same as the E55. My W211 would just give me the power, so easy to go. The W212 makes me feel like I have to constantly beg. Plus the ride on my E63 does not feel as smooth. I just bought new Conti DWS 06+ tires yesterday in an effort to smooth and quiet the ride. They are nicer and I'm still evaluating the difference.
But keep the supercharged E55.

Funny I came across this thread, prior w211 e55 owner for 3-4 yrs .I've been looking for a 14-16 E63S for some time now , finally found one locally that I have a deposit on . Was able to take it on a decently spirited road test earlier today . Power doesn't come in as violently like the 55 did from a roll , but I didn't want to keep flogging it wot with the salesman. So hard to really gauge the roll ons .
But as said already, blower car with almost full power off idle vs turbos . The 63 to me handled better , more planted , and handled overall speed smoother . I think all of that combined with a newer more efficient transmission - may be what plays into the hey this doesn't have the e55 punch at times. Also to note 0-60 was like lightning , and looks like 0-100 is around the 8sec mark .Very impressive for what they are .I'm sold and will most likely take the one I drove.
I went in not expecting a light switch on/off powerband with 600hp instantly at your disposal. Some reviews i've seen did , and may give off the wrong vibe. I'm sure drivetrain longevity , traction , and emissions/mpg all play a big roll in the oem tune/powerband

It sounds like a completely different experience than the E55. Both can be great in their own unique ways.

Input coming from a recent first time Mercedes owner. I have a 2014 E63S and before I purchased this car I honestly didn’t give Mercedes much thought. Although I can certainly appreciate what it is, the E55 never did much for me. I am biased, but I would definitely go W212 E63 for the interior and exterior updates and styling alone. Even the W212 E63 I feel like has a fairly dated interior (in today’s standards), but IMO much nicer than the E55. People keep mentioning the instant punch of the E55 power, but honestly, I kind of like how the E63 just starts to pull harder and harder. I mean it does 0-60 in the mid 3 second range so the power is there no doubt, I think it’s just delivered more efficiently and refined.
Goodluck with whatever you decide.

I made this move
In the end, I do miss some of the old features but the supercharger clutch was a wear item I was up against and the solutions were few.
I happened upon a 13 wagon. I wanted 14plus but when a wagon pops up and is local, you buy it, haha. It’s very different and also great. I compare cars for what they are but not against each other. Nearly everything is different. Some options have disappeared oveer time such as passenger dynamic and front airmatic, and some new stuff is now improved and nearly self driving.
I sold my car for nothing, 5g, in 19 and wish I had kept it in hindsight, as I have two and what’s one more. The e55 with a tune and 83mm pulley is no match for the stock 212 63s (which in 13 meant power package and brakes)
The 55 was brute, the 63 is a a more refined brute with a big sound.

The M157 is stock form is likely tame compared to a tuned M113. Fast but maybe refined to the point of not having that visceral joy. The AWD makes it even more idiot-proof.
But a tuned M157 is probably every bit as fun as your E55. I hope to find out as soon as the warranty is up!

I'm guessing he's saying he'd choose the M156 over the M113.

It's been painful to say the least, especially with all the idiot Hellcat drivers out and about that need to be put in their places. But I have a bunch of warranty issues to work out so that definitely helps quell the urge.

For some reason I hate seeing all the Chargers and Challengers out there. Dime a dozen!!!!

I went from a stock w211 e63 to a weistec e55 and now have a 12 e63 wagon. The e55 is a great car but the 212 e63 is definitely better. With downpipes, the m157 sounds ferocious and the transmission is incredible. I felt the trans in the e55 was the weakest link in regards to pure driving experience. They are both fantastic cars and both are pretty reliable so either way, it's a winning decision.
