Steering column motor for up/down not working

Hey Guys,

Been awhile since my last post.

So my 2015 E63s steering column stopped responding to the up and control knob. It still telescopes though.

Any of you guys hear about this failure mode?

I do have a driver side seatbelt that needs replacing because emergency tensioner fired in a crash about 4 months back. Damage was to rear of car though. Just got car back and they missed this seatbelt and are going to replace it. Any chance that steering column up/down movement could get locked out under some safety protocol while seat belt code is still present? Seems like a long shot.

The thing is, is that I can’t be certain that up down motor was working before the crash.

The column does make just a slight bump sound like it wants to move when I push knob up and down, but no actual movement.

Weird. And God only knows what it costs to repair it. 🤦‍♂️

The good news is that it is locked in my originally programmed position.

Thanks in advance.

Raise it as high as it will go, and slap the bottom. Not hard, but not soft. Do it while holding the up then try doing it when holding down. I read about it a while back and it fixed mine. Something about the ****y nylon gears for the mechanism getting stuck

The most reliable way to move it down is to push upward with your knees on the bottom of the wheel, then continue to do so while pressing the button downward. Once it starts moving you can uninvolve the knees. It's counterintuitive, but works.

Normally the wheel gets stuck in the up position and won't go down. So it could be a sensor issue, too.

I had a slightly different issue. Mine would stick in the all the up position. A good stiff hit with my hand would "unstick" it and then it would start working (I'm sure something in the mechanism was binding). I'd have to do this every couple of months.

Question: Do y'all keep that feature where the steering wheel moves out of your way in order to allow easier access on?

Thanks for the tips guys. Will give it a try. Mine is not stuck at one end or the other. It’s stuck somewhere in between. Where I had it programmed. But I will try the knees thing and slapping the biatch around! 🤣
