Instrument cluster

So in looking at quite a few dash pics it appears that when My car was federalized the Canadian cluster is still in it. The car is an "S" but the insignia on the bottom of the speedo shows just AMG. The digital speedo is correct but the analog matches nothing, kmh or mph. If I install a U.S replacement is there any programming or re-programming needed? The overall mileage is documented in both a US and CA carfax so I think that's correct. I may switch read-out temporarily back to KMH just to see what it does.

I have a Canadian market car that I imported myself and had the same issue. The cluster comes out easily (there are youtube videos on it) you just replace the plastic guage face with the numbers on it. I bought a used genuine OEM mph guage face from Europe from a person who changed from MPH to KPH when I put it in the numbers did not line up correctly just like yours, upon further investigation I found that you need the specific guage face specifically for converting a kph cluster to mph, when you look at it the spacing between the numbers stretches to accommodate the different needle movement, I cant find who I bought it from, sorry, but if you find it , it is an easy install. you do not need a whole new cluster. I think i paind 125 bucks for it. now my cluster is perfectly accurate from the digital speed readout and the needle

Thanks for that info, I will look into it. The pics I have seen of U.S. "S" speedos show 80 mph straight up. Whatever cluster is in Mine has 100 mph straight up so I now think it's the wrong cluster and incorrectly calibrated as well.

that's right, on my first try I put in a face plate with the 100mph straight up, the correct one has 80mph straight up. I'm guessing the speedo shop that did your conversion used a used faceplate from a usa car being converted for kph rather than the specialty one. These shops never change the whole instrument cluster, they take apart the existing cluster and just change the plastic ring with the numbers on it. It's an easy DIY if you can locate the correct faceplate. You could also take out the cluster and ship it overnight to one of these speedo shops, there are plenty in upstate NY along the canadian border.

So how does the speedo needle "know" where to point then. 80 mph on My digital read out has the needle pointing nowhere near straight up.

Sorry maybe I explained it wrong, the incorrect faceplate (which works on originally manufactured MPH gauge clusters only, not on kph converted clusters) shows 80mph in the straight up position. The faceplate you need which is made for just this purpose, has 100mph in the straight up position and 80mph in the 11oclock position. that is where your needle should be pointing at 80mph. The needle doesn't change, just the scale of the writing. here is a picture of the correct faceplate installed in my cluster note 100mph is at 12 oclock position, the second picture is of the one you probably have in your car.

a while ago, I referred to it when correcting my first time mistake.

Thanks for the pic. My overlay looks like this which is why I think there may be an "S" model vs a non "S" faceplate I need to find Your faceplate it seems.

Yes I see now Your numbers and 2nd set of inner hash marks would be right on. Now to figure out the part # for the correct faceplate. Thank again.

Yeah I watched some last night. I just didn't want to fool with the needles if I don't need too.

you dont have to remove the needle, the ring goes around it for the speedo. special hook tool needed to remove a/c vent during cluster removal, very cheap and available on amazon

No I meant removing the needles for gas , temp and tach. If I don't have to swap all 3 faces.

Well this operation was good and not so good. The new overlay looks great. Whoever took the dash apart last time wasn't. Broken air directional vanes in passenger side air vent. Broken tab for one of the metal clips in the glove box. Broken lower tab on the gauge surround. Broken tabs on the back of dash trim piece that is from gauge cluster to the passenger air vent. Somebody just started yanking parts off until something moved. ugh

Sounds like the guy was a real hack, I felt lucky that I was able to find a video showing all the hidden snap tabs when removing the cluster so that I was able to do the work with no collateral damage...
