Timing cover

Just wondering if this cover has some type of silicone or gasket on it? It seem that there is something on it.

See the different color

Notice the color difference on the inside. I have tried to clean it but nothing. I just dont want to put this back together and the gasket doesnt seal properly

Probably a seal required - not a gasket - see this thread for similar

Thank Peter. That was my post. To me it seems like something is on it but doesn't come off. Large job. Needed the cover off to get the valve cover on. Fml. Now this has me worried putting everything back together

not steel wool. I didn't want to mess up the surface. I tried acetone and goof off and nothing.

I look at the part and it doesn't come like that. Not sure if previous owner had a leak and thats how the dealship fixes that issue..

Yes, I just resealed my upper covers not long ago . New sealant will not adhere well to this existing grey coating . I found the red scotchbrite pads removed it pretty easily. If it's left on the covers , they will weep again shortly.

These covers are sealed to the head with Mercedes loctite black gasket maker. Follow the sealing pattern. I used a brass brush to clean the surface, followed by brake cleaner and finally alcohol or acetone. Improper prep and the Mercedes gasket maker will fail. On another note I’ve used reinzosil with much success as the cure time is much better. It’s not preferred by all but is a very suitable substitute. The Mercedes stuff can take a week to cure to be able to be driven, literally. Stay with a small bead and you’ll be good with whatever cures the best imvho. I can not tell you how many times I’ve had to redo jobs with Mercedes gasket maker that never cured as it needs warm humid conditions and basically does not work in the winter in a ungaraged scenario. Good luck.

Yeah you'll need an abrasive like wool or brass brush - it's time.

New covers have the same grey type coating on them. I bought a new one. I used brakecleaner & a red scotchbrite pad. Took some elbow grease but it comes off.

Mb oem sealant - I let it cure for 24hrs. About 10k mi. Later & they're bone dry.

Sorry fellas. I'm back with another issue. I finally got all the parts and started putting everything back together.

I was able to remove both left turbo coolant lines.
Here is my problem. I was only able to do get the lower turbo installed. I cant seem to find a way to install the the top line. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

i can't help with this current issue but if you don't mind completing the solution you found for the gray gasket material - for future members to reference. Thanks and good luck, you're almost there

I'm not there yet. I will def be doing that. I just put in the leftside coolant lines for the turbo.

Does anyone have any pics of how the lines sit on turbo housing? Bottom one is flush but top one maybe has a 1/4 inch from being flushed on housing. Is that normal? I know the 2 brackets meet from screw placement, is this the reason?

If it came from factory, why take it off. Maybe a better question is why would the factory put that on to just take if off.

New parts in a factory have a better chance of adhering well….but they leak fast so how well did that actually work? Factories and especially engineers make mistakes.. The porous nature of magnesium likely means once oil has penetrated the outermost layer, it can not be cleaned well enough without the sanding to adhere. Some of this is due to the completely substandard loctite that Mercedes uses. Sanding works the first time. Try it the other way and it will not work for any extended period of time. This has been this way with every modern amg I’ve worked on. Valve covers, breathers, timing covers, etc.
