2014 M157 Oil Filter Housing: warranty denied

Hi, just purchased my second E63, a 2014 with 80,000 miles. Great service history (all MB). Now have an oil leak from the lower oil filter housing (and it must be recent), this is the driest engine I've seen, no seepage from anywhere!
Purchased from MB with a First Mile warranty. The warranty company claim that this is not covered!
Not a positive response from MB Richmond so far.
Has anyone else been down this path?

What is the reason they gave for not covering it? Can they point to the contract where it states it's not covered?

Personally, I would cancel the contract and get your money back. You can do that and it should not cost anything. Then take your money and reach out to @Highline-Autos.com , a sponsor here and seller for Fidelity and another brand. They stand behind what they sell.

I waiting for an emailed reply, but the conversation relayed by my local MB service writer seemed to indicate that they claimed that a leaking oil filter housing is a "maintenance issue",

The warranty was provided by MB of Richmond, so I am not (directly) out of pocket, but the price was on the high side.

Doesn't matter who sold it to you, by law you are allowed to cancel these third-party vehicle service contracts and get refunded. Read your contract thoroughly and look for cancellation clauses. If you have an electronic copy, search "cancellation". When I bought my car used, the selling dealer also sold me a third-party "vehicle service contract" (which is the legal term). When I found a better deal for less money, I canceled and got my money refunded.

The dealer should have your back on this one, you purchased the car and warranty from them, and you took the vehicle back to them almost immediately when an issue appeared. 100% either they are liable for selling you a broken vehicle or selling your a bad warranty, either way, you should not be having to pick up the tab.

Thanks ... the car was purchased from Mercedes Benz of Richmond, VA (Shawn Snider, sales manager). The evaluation was done at Bob King Mercedes Benz in Wilmington, NC. Less than a thousand miles since picking up on Jan 9 2025.

I'm willing to trailer the car back to them if needed!

The leak is a DIY to repair and it's probably not the housing that is leaking. It's most likely the oil thermostat plug/seal in the housing that is leaking. Most places will just swap the whole assembly, but you don't necessarily have to do that. If you DIY, the plug comes out by turning clockwise. In this case it is righty loosie.

Thanks. I did see the Youtube video of the plug being replaced (
). They don't show the part number, but did find the part in EPC, however, there are 2 numbers for the 2014 E63. I'm getting the car from the MB shop this morning; I'll check with the parts folks and will update this email with the correct part number. If I end up having to foot the bill, I'm replacing the seal first!

I’m looking to repair this exact issue myself! Do you happen to have the p/n for that plug/seal? I’ve replaced the whole housing gasket in the past, but fear I overlooked maintenance of this plug

Exactly. That is what my issue was...and now, sitting in a drawer......

Wow ... thank you for the most helpful photos

Was the thermostat housing the only part that needs to be removed?

I just took a new picture as it sits....removal list:
  • drivers side intake
  • serpentine belt
  • thermostat

Many thanks! Plug ordered from FCP, and a thermostat from Amazon (just in case I break the existing one!), plus a new belt. The 'stat will get returned if the existing one is OK.
I'm guessing that removing the fan helps give better access ... thoughts?

I see no benefit of taking out the fan. Unless you have gorilla arms. I did all of my work with out the fans out with out any issues what so ever.

I definitely qualify, in more ways than one I think 🤪

I forget that my m278 coupe model has the dang oil temp/press sensor right in front of that other plug. I have the thermostat removed and soon to replace plug. Dealer price paid for parts to get mine resolved quickly

Wish I would have removed the fan before doing the job. It's easy to remove the fan and the extra space is great. Be careful not to break the little overflow coolant/breather/whatever line it is on top of the radiator as it gets very brittle. Might as well replace that while you are in there because it sometimes breaks the first time you touch it.
