E63 Coolant leak found

Hey everyone. I sent my car to a shop for a coolant leak and they actually found it. I didn’t understand what the tech told me other than a hose by the firewall. I managed to find it and it looks like it’s in a very uncomfortable spot to do a DIY. I’ll probably spend about $150 to replace the hoses and like almost 2k in labor. Is this a common issue on the M157’s and is there a way I can change it on my own so I can save money?

This is behind the engine/driver side firewall.
This is behind the engine/driver side firewall.

I drew a red arrow below to indicate where it’s located.

LEAKY O-RING

this is a really standard repair... ~100kMi?
$2000 only??

Vibrations are really what's helping stress this hose connection.

How old are your Engine Mount + Tranny ?

Did that when the tranny was out. It's a bit tight but can be done from the top. About 20 min.work. Coolant will make a little mess.

I did my own...there are some tricks! First, first - your firewall is "fake" and can be removed. Take out your broken hose....then, on the passenger side pull the electronics over, and disconnect the other hose. It is a bit of a back and forth task, it comes up and out. You then have the space to replace that hose (there are a few other "while you are there" things...all very inexpensive).

This might be $2k at the stealership, it can be 2-4 hours in your garage!

The car has 123k miles now. I bought it with 122k. It already had the leak, which was undisclosed by the dealer and my fault for not paying for a ppi. The engine mounts were changed out with aftermarket ones and the tranny not sure. I have not checked.

I just saw a video of a guy performing the same job. I will most likely watch it again and do it myself. It looks tight, but doable.

Awesome! Thank you for the insight. From looking at the video it didn’t seem hard. It just looks like a bit of squeezing your fingers/hands in between tight crevices and taking things apart. Most likely I’ll buy the hoses around that area and change them out while I’m at it. I figured 2k was a lot for hose replacements, but that’s because I did not know what the labor entailed. Now I do

Remember, when your plastic break (and they will)...a soldering iron is a loving tool sent by god to assist you in the easiest way possible. I used one yesterday on our GLS to get out a broken fitting. 60 seconds, melted a line (to the aluminum) and nabbed the inside O-ring with a hook-pick. It all popped out (two O-Rings and the plastic).

I just started the diy trying to change the hoses out. I managed to change out the hose behind the fire wall. Now I need to change out the heater hose that, which is actually leaking and I can’t manage to get the clamp off to release it. Any ideas? I’m basically feeling my way and touching blindly.

it looks like you have the clip pulled up/off. If you were just having problems with that connection, it is really difficult to remove in my experience and you might need to use a tool but very carefully. Tried to rotate it a tiny bit to break the seal..

I pried this off already. I need to find out how to pull that same hose off the engine block. It also has a clip that holds it into the block, but i’m trying to figure out how to pry the clip off without having to take off all the other stuff preventing me from doing so. I can place my middle finger around the clip, but I don’t have enough leverage to pry it off.

Use or make a small pick tool.

Might as well be, but it’s not 😆 . It took me 2 days because i’m juggling between life with my kids and the in between activities life brings at you. I would have been done way sooner, but family always comes first.

well, the way I think about it is you save yourself probably 3 to $4000 at a dealer so it’s a nice payday.

Two days? Now your just bragging. Mine was about a week! That was the first one where I found on I think a Nissan forum to melt the fittings out of the engine block.....oh, good times. I also changed the temp sensor back there while I was in the area.
