Front Tires question

23K Miles was put on

Front inner tires are balding, rest of the tread is in great shape.
can I just relace the front tires? Rears are at 50-60% tread life.

Curious as to new tires in the front and old tires in the rear can harm the drivetrain in any way. Would appreciate your feedback

I really don't think that any mechanical harm could come of installing new tires at the front while keeping the rears at 50% life. Most people would just replace all 4. But, hey, what can I say? I'd go as far as getting high thread used tires for the front while I wear down those 1/2 way decent tires at the rear so I could get 4 fresh new ones later, lol! Not advice. That'd be just me!

Old &!new tires combined

You can certainly replace just the fronts, it's about staying within a few percent of overall diameter. I did my fronts recently, my rears are of different ages but within a few /32nds of tread depth.

Fwiw my fronts wore out much like yours. I've since replaced the 4 front lower control arms as well as the outer tie rods, hoping that'll diminish wear a bit (at more than 100k miles, everything in front was perished including the sway bar links)

Alignment

Not AWD, but on my 2010 E63 I had the dealer align it and use camber bolts to get rid if some of the excessive camber. Seems to have resolved the issue. Might want to look at that.

I see! That was my concern as well, rolling diameter.
It seems as if the front suspension calls of much more attention and love. Especially the driver side

how long have you owned the car? With how many miles added?

Classic indication of too much toe out.
I had that problem too. Also installed correction bolts to reduce camber.

Today's models ever increasing speed of new car assembly lines Front Camber and Caster adjustment along with Rear Camber has now been deleted !

New Car Industry's Best Kept Secret - The often quoted reassuring “Will carry out a full Front and Rear ‘4’ Wheel Alignment” - Is now only basic TOE (directional) adjustment.

Now just one setting - To suit showroom height conditions - No longer ongoing adjustment for excess passenger side edge wear through high cambered roads. Altered height (Load carrying or lowering). Performance driving or Track days (excess outer edge wear both sides). Curb knock damage.

We saw the need therefore and manufacture “BOLT ON” kits - No time consuming need for control arm removal. Replacement bushes allowing precise “easily accessible” - Single wrench adjustment. Direct on alignment rack UNDER LOAD.

Also same time also replacing and uprating the 4 front and rear highest wearing bushings !

I have excessive camber, especially on the right side. The suspension components are all in good shape, but I haven't checked the ride height to see if the springs are shot. That's next. However, do you have a link to the camber adjusting bolts? I live in Chicago and the camber is great enough that potholes, if hit just right, cause the rim to flex enough on the inside edge to hit the ball joint, gouging the inside of the rim and bending the rim lip. It has happened twice, so I need to do something. Not to mention the front tread depth looks great, but it's damn near to the threads on the inside edges of the tires.

I noticed that the fronts are unforgiving to lower pressures.

I run higher pressures up front and the uneven wear has dramatically improved Still a toe issue.

From the look of the OP's list of cars, they all have staggered sizes and cannot be rotated. Balancing won't help excessive inner tire wear.

I run 45psi up front, but that's not it. The camber is so much that it is visible.

The curse of staggered setups. I squared up my X7 for several reasons, tire rotation being among them.

I run square in the winter 255 F/R.
On my last season of my current set of Nokian R3s. Even wear swapping them F to R each season.

Same with my wife's X3, a square winter set.

In the summer both vehicles run the standard staggered fitment.

Same. I have the winter wheels on now with 255 all around, but can't wait until I can get the summer wheels on. Handles SO much better, SO much quieter, and more FUN to be had.

Definitely looking forward to putting on the summer setup. Last year I switched to te Conti DWS versus 'summer tires' and they definitely fit my needs better.

NICE! The ExtremeContact DWS06 is a worthy option instead of something dedicated to only summer use. If our cars were tire burners (can't do that with full-time all-wheel-drive, sadly), I'd probably go for something like that. But I use the ExtremeContact Sport 02 and the rear treadwear is fantastic. I need to fix this camber issue so I don't destroy another rim, and the inner edge doesn't wear so badly.

Just a few more weeks and we'll be able to get those summer shoes out!
