Wow, all these openings on the nose of the car are debris catchers

I had some debris issues with this car but nothing that created an operational breakdown.

I would say most people who are secure with themselves like my posts, I have provided a lot of useful information to a new owner of this car of things to be attentive with and useful information regarding things like gas mileage, bet most people did not know this car does not go into 4 cylinder mode with Distronic engaged, also as I thought with all the features this car has over the older models such as the 9 speed auto trans, the glide mode in the trans, the variable displacement and a smaller displacement motor it does infact get better gas mileage than the older models as I thought it would, I have proven that. As the car breaks in more I'm sure it will only get better. i have also given much useful information about break in of these cars, although people like you probably don't really care about that and when you go back to the dealer for warrantee claims because you were careless with things that you chose to ignore, you raise the price of these cars for the rest of us through warrantee claims that could have been avoided. You asked the profession I was in, I was a Quality Control Engineer within the Automotive field and am now retired. I was simply giving my honest impressions of this car in my threads and you got pissed off because I have my car and you don't.
And can't wait for more of us to take delivery and start some useful dialogue that includes solves. Or maybe you did include that and I missed it? How did you fix? Was there space to get some mesh behind there without noticing? There is a really good material that some use for hiding their laser jammer heads, all black with good air flow. I'll find out what that is.

Ok sounds good. Sorry man I’m irritable as all heck with the long drive I just did. Big time sleep deprivation. Not myself. Hopefully I’ll get this figured out with Benz. I’m working on it. The point I’m making to them is the should offer black mesh covers as accessory. I sure don’t feel like having to pay for a radiator on this car because they tell me a stone took it out and it’s not covered under warranty where it was their engineering screw up like Vic said.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
These openings are a BIG PROBLEM.
Not just hypothetically, but in fact.
My car was 6 days old, driving on a very clean highway in October (ie. ideal conditions). A 1/2 inch stone popped onto the small rad on the passenger side, puncturing the radiator. Got a low coolant warning. Rad needed replacement. Fortunately I was near a gas station so I could buy anti freeze and keep topping it up to allow me to get to a safe spot.
All 3 rads in the front are way too exposed.
My solution (ugly though it is, as I was in a hurry) is shown on the attached photo.
Mercedes is irresponsible for allowing this car to go out this way. It's a bloody everyday driving car, not some garage queen that ill never be driven (and as my car demonstrated , it only took 6 days in perfect driving conditions to puncture the aluminum rad). By the way, both my C63 and AMG GTS have protective grills on their corresponding openings - see photo -silver car is my GTS).

The initial/instinctive response from dealer was that I was on my own. Road hazard.
After some dialogue, pointing out that I had a car with clearly an intrinsic design weakness, and only had driven it 6 days, it failed under nearly ideal dry summer conditions, and I currently own 3 AMGs and have 3 more on order, the dealer decided it was good policy to cover it.
Not sure if they did, or will get reimbursement, from M-B. I recommended they go after M-B, and would support them if asked.

I thought these claims of rock in the radiator were Far fetched and then it happened to me. Rock damaged the AC condenser on my 911 Turbo S. Cost $1600 to replace. Naturally I had the dealer install the mesh while doing the repair.

I think the screen idea is a great idea. Not only from a dollar point of view but also a let’s not get stranded on the highway at midnight in the breakdown lane in the Bronx point of view. But whatever I guess some people have more money than brains
but ya you definitely did the right thing thunder mb and I plan on doing the same. I believe in taking care of my car and keeping it like new.

I did look at the front of the car this morning and was surprised at how vulnerable the radiators seem.
Before I drop the car off for shipment home, I'm going to make a couple templates to bring home with me so while I'm waiting, I can make a couple of mesh covers to put on the car when it gets delivered to the States.

Lost an intercooler on my 2014 audi S4 due to an exact situation.
Road hazard not covered by warranty, of course, and cost nearly $1500 to repair. Picked up some simple heavy duty screen door material from HD and pulled the bunper to install. My choice was black screening asthe car was black. Invisible from 5+' away.

Great idea with the Screen Door material. I did also see some plastic mesh on ebay but I'm holding off, I'm hoping some company comes up with pre-cut screens with clips soon, I'm kind of sloppy with things like that and I want it to look right. Most of the highway driving is done for a while for me with the AMG as I'm heading back up north to get my S550 for all the highway driving I do down south. Put way too many miles already on the AMG, up to 3300 miles now and I have not even had the car for a month yet, lol. I'm trying to keep the AMG to under 12K miles per year hopefully. The S550 I'll be driving around 25K miles per year and then my truck 10K miles per year towing my boat to races.

I know about debris...
I was running "The Tail of the Pig", like the Tail of the Dragon, but in Arkansas. A loaded dump trunk coming the opposite way on the lane next to me took a quick right. I saw the rock coming and wished it didn't hit the carbon fiber hood. It went directly into the grill, not touching any part of the bumper. It may have bounced on the street before going through the front grill. You can see where it came in, a few inches to the right of center. The radiators were untouched... Sorry about the dirt and bugs, Arkansas!

Just to update this thread - I promised to go up to Zunsport to see what they could do. Just got off the phone with Peter, I believe he's one of the directors of Zunsport. I'll be headed up there on Monday and they're gonna have a look at the car to see what can be done. Will update you guys after the trip.
It's a great way to get 300mi off the clock. I'm dying to open this thing up.

As far as I know, they're booked up into the New Year for the actual work, so Monday is just a proof of concept thing. Might be a while yet.
