2018 BMW M5
The first reviews of the 2018 BMW M5 are popping up:
0-60 in 3.1 seconds (vs 3.2 in the AMG)
1/4 mile 11.1 (vs. 11.2 in the AMG)
So it looks like they are quite evenly matched. Will be interesting to see how all the comparisons turn out.

Once again a transmission holdback on the AMG IMO. Even with a conventional auto, I think the M is putting the power down better than the MCT will allow.
I never really paid attention until recently, but my 535 has much more responsive shifter paddles than my AMG even in sport plus or manual modes. I do not know if the actual shift times are any better in the E63, but when you click on the paddles, the E thinks for a second and the BMW just shifts
This is on a conventional 535i so I can only imagine how much faster the M5 will respond and shift.
Also.isnt the M supposed to be a little lighter than the AMG?

Thanks for posting the video. Looks like it will be close, performance-wise. I actually had a deposit on the m5, but after experiencing the new e63, went about a search to find a new AMG, and was successful. Both will be fast, both will look nice, but the AMG interior/tech is much more fun in my mind.
Kponti, the trans in the new e63s is in a different league compared to the w212. It's much better, smoother, quicker, etc. No more clunks from 2-3, no morelag, and shifting in manual is just about immediate. I've been driving this thing in race mode, in manual, the past few days, and it's a beast. I will tune it, but I keep thinking, does it even need a tune? The answer is 'sure, why not', but wow.
Can't wait to drive the m5 as well when it comes out.

I was a little surprised to see that the heavier less powerful Porsche Panamera turbo puts out about the same or slightly faster 0 to 60 times as the E

I'm gonna have to go drive the new E soon. But the number one reason I want to get rid of my car is the lag in the throttle under normal driving.

All of these cars are getting really really quick. Fun times picking which one you like most!

The MCT 9 speed in the new E63S is far better than the older versions. BMW is using the ZF which is a strong tranny too; which I have in my RS7. Lets be real, the M5 weighs ~300 lbs or so less and is .1 faster in both measurements? Thats not the tranny--- thats weight Ill bet as they have similar power plants. BTW what was the trap speed?
This is one of many to come. The looks of the M5 mirror the M3 and for me, sound means a lot and I just never had that enjoyment in both my 2013 and 2016 M5's (well I changed the exhausts to get there)
This from some of the commentary:

Not comparable to the Mercedes acceleration, because: 1. You timed the Merc yourself, while you used a V-box to time the BMW. 2. Your Drag raced the Mercedes on a crappy airfield ? with horrible asphalt conditions, while you launched the BMW on a race track with perfect and grippy surface conditions. 3. Launch both of the cars on the same surface and then we will talk.

Edit: while the video claims the Panny is more, the Porsche official site has it at 4365 and the official Benz site shows the E at 4515.... hmmmmmm

M cars used to excite me with aural and visual delights (owned two different M3's). Not so much any more in the looks department IMO.
Also, the M5 doesn't come in a wagon! If it did I would explore it more seriously as that's a requirement for me...

Vic congrats on the new ride (Feel like I have said that at least a few dozen times!)! I think the new M5 posted a gps trap speed of 127.5 mph in the video when they panned the camera to the vbox. In the same range as most of the European mags for the W213 E63 S (I think Autocar posted 126.6 mph).

I drove the Panamera 4s & Turbo before picking the E63. Besides the Panamera being significantly more expensive, I found the E63 just more visceral. Panamera is a great sedan though.
I hope that the Porsche Passport program is working out as planned. Love to have that option here!

1/4 mile 11.1 (vs. 11.2 in the AMG)

So it looks like they are quite evenly matched. Will be interesting to see how all the comparisons turn out.

It will be interesting to see what the M5 Competition Package can do next year.

Hmm. I understand you posted another vid from Australia but the EVO vid clearly beat the Panamera on every measurement.

I just checked on the pricing again. For whatever reason I thought it was cheaper. But FWIW I like the concept of swapping a third car without long-term commitment. My wife and I work in the same business so we ride-share 90% of the time. So our cars may see 5k miles a year or so and I am looking for a way to do some add-ons (short term)

Is the M5 still using conventional steel springs with adjustable dampers?
