The flagship halo car, the GT R, features a console-mounted shifter, which suggests it is not obsolete as a concept.

PS- while we are on the subject of interior features, still no steering wheel heater.
Either remove it or put it in the center console, where it is if you track the car with racing gloves I hit it all the time.

Yes in the past they were in the column, so were steel wheels and body frames.
I can see why people that don't track the car would not care, but if I am going to buy a 600HP car it is going to be more than for driving to the grocery store, thus the use of racing driving gloves. Driving with racing driving gloves is not for show, it is for safety, grip and feel when your hands get sweaty, and not to sweat the steering wheel for when you need to use the car for your commute. If you like in the column good for you; you got what you wanted. For myself, that alone make it a big deterrent to buy the car.

Main reason why I'm gunning for the W213 over the W212 is the fact that it comes in green... that and the interior updates - otherwise, there isn't much for me to take advantage of performance wise on the street.

Does it? I haven't seen any green ones on autotrader. Is it special order?

Yup, at least according to the online configuration. Same with bronze ( and those are incredibly rare even in the facelifted W212 ).

I feel like the unique colors, the Piedmont Green Metallic and Dakota Brown Metallic are well worth the $720 up charge for resell value. It's one of those it might not sell as fast, but because there's less the people who do buy them/want them will be more willing to pay a higher cost on the used market years later ( happened with my Miata - friend had a red on black 07 with 80k less miles than mine, which was green on tan. I sold mine for $4k more than he could get for his and what the market reflected ).
