Is it possible to disable that foot opener/closer of the rear hatch?

I don't think it is, I looked under every section of the menu I could find. But with me I'd prefer to turn this feature off if possible as sometimes my feet get under the bumper and the hatch comes closing down on my head. I'd really like to just turn off this feature, one of these times it's gonna get me real good.

Me too on wanting to know how to disable the "kick to open or close" on the rear tailgate. On my car, despite trying multiple times, I've never successfully gotten the tailgate to open by kicking under the bumper. But, I have had multiple times where the tailgate closes onto my head while I'm loading things into the back...

ive done some searches and can’t seem to find anything. I was just at the dealer today too but forgot to ask. I was always sorry my 2012 did not have this feature now I’m sorry my 2018 does have it. Like you said. It’s hard to get it to work when you want it but when you don’t the hatch is more than willing to come down on your head when you least expect it.

Two weeks ago the trunk lid came down squarely on the top of my wife's head . NOT FUNNY . She ended up in the ER ,had an exam for concussion and was sent for a CT scan.Fortunately no permanent damage , but she still has a lump on her head and the headache lasted for days. Took the car to the dealer, they found no fault with the sensor, but reprogrammed the software for the opener. We don't use the feature anymore.
I'd like to disable it. I wonder if there is a connector on the sensor that can be disconnected. I should have asked at the dealer.

That's awful. Glad no permanent injury.

On the F10 M5 people found that installing an aftermarket carbon fiber diffuser would render the foot sensor ineffective. So I would imagine that it is possible to cover the sensor and render it ineffective with the right material. Carbon Fiber is a known inhibitor. It may be worth going to a custom shop and having them modify the car accordingly. This way you won't have an error message or require reprogramming.

Yes exactly, I'm thinking it might be as simple as putting Gorilla duct tape over the sensor. Could somebody look underneath around the bumper area. I'd do it but I'm in a wheelchair and not very easy for me to get down on the ground and look under the car. If it looks possible I'll bring the car down to the tire place with the tape and have them put it up on the lift so I can apply the tape. I did get a call back from the service guy at the Mercedes Dealer today and he said they can disable it by pulling the wire clip off the sensor and it would be $88.00 as they need to take off a side panel or something. I would do that but the problem is he said there would be a light on the dash all the time and I'm not crazy about that idea as I am kind of a perfectionist. I'm liking the tape idea though, it does sound like it might work. A buddy of mine told me to do this today. Ya, though I worry about getting injured by getting beaned off the head, Glad the wife is alright. I can believe it can happen though, I think these things should only work for opening the tailgate but not for closing it, that would be the real solution.

the sensor is not underneath the bumper ... it is the two sensors on the bumper itself that detect the kicking motion.

Yes. It should only open the trunk. Even if your hands are full after emptying the trunk you can almost always get a thumb or pinky free to press the button. And in any case it is not worth the risk of injury.

That is terrible and I'm sorry for your wife's pain and the ordeal. I never had issues over 3.5yr with my '14. I actually had more trouble getting it to open than anything. Sometimes took a few attempts.

darn so it sounds like the tape idea won’t work. Probably by unplugging those sensors it would eliminate the maneuvering assist which I like having. Darn. I guess I’m just going to have to be very careful.

those are used as parking sensor too. If you tape them, then it may result in error/fault message perhaps.
