Replacement of intercooler and issues with MB

Hey everyone,

i was at mercedes benz today because my transmission kept overheating. I found out that I was going to have to replace my intercooler because a rock flew in it and led all the cooler leak out. I was told initially it would be $1500 replacement and would take 2 days which I did not have. I was supposed to leave to New York tomorrow and had booked everything in advanced.

After hours of arguing they decided to give me a free replacement but said it still would take two days because the only intercooler left was in Montreal for the E63S. Then after another hour of arguing they said that they will get it the same day. However I later found out that they lied to me and actually got their part from Mercedes Toronto.

as the end of the day came to a close I got my car fixed but the fact that they tried to scam me and lie to me to delay the process is very frustrating as a new E63s owner. I have had numberuous issues throughout the 8 months that I have had this car and this was my breaking point. Up until today I have had issues with switching modes, changing into manual and rumbling of engine. Gotta say Mercedes needs to step it up.

I also need advice with the intercooler. I have attached a picture of it but am wonder is there two intercooler behind the Mercedes logo? Because it seems odd to me how the placement now is. Please if anyone has an E63s can you take a picture and post it here?

Thanks,

Martin

Sorry to hear you didn't find out about these sooner. Here's some pics and info you got lucky they replaced for free.

One of the reason M5 is above e63s on my list.

The main dilemma I have is currently the M5 leases much better with higher residual and lower MF. If I can offset that with a good E63 discount there's no way I'm choosing M5 even though infotainment tech is currently better until MBUX comes out.

I've never liked the interior of BMW and exterior is just ok not exciting, and BMW overall I can't stand people who own them I realize stereotyping.

My sales experiences at BMW have been bad as well of the 3-4 times I've entertained leasing or buying any non-commodity has been met with "MSRP" or "1-2% off MSRP is the best we can do" in the past MF was higher but I guess they've made a change on that.

I'll be much happier spending $300 on the Zunsport if the 19 model doesn't have the front openings protected better. Apparently the issue is not unique to just E63 or they wouldn't have a business making so many of these.

The later build E63S are equipped with intercooler guards from the factory so I would think all 2019 models would as well. The factory ones are nice as they not only blend in but also minimize turbulence and restriction of air so minimal performance is lost if any. Personally, I think MB should provide them to any owner that does not have them.

Do you mean the tiny plastic guards directly attached to the fins I've seen several pictures of? That's better than nothing but I'm not relying on that solution unless there's some proof the Zunsport will restrict enough to reduce performance.

Yes, the OEM plastic guards. For me, this is a reasonable amount of protection. Sure, a large/fast enough piece of debris can still cause a puncture, however, this can be said about any guard. It's just a matter of how much protection you're willing to sacrifice cooling for. I'm not saying the Zunsport guards are bad, I'm sure they work great. Do they impede air flow? Anything in front of a radiator does but I doubt 90% of owners would notice under typical conditions. The thing I like about the OEM guards is that they completely cover the tubes where the coolant is but not the fins which do the cooling. All other guards use a mesh that evenly protect and expose the intercoolers.

It all honesty the dealership did you a favor.
1. Replaced a damaged part due to a foreign object hitting it at no cost to you.
2. Cater to your unreasonable time frame. All they had to do is give you a loaner car for 2 days.

Spoke to dealer

I ordered a 2019 and my dealer said it will not come with any guards for the intercoolers.

I agree, dealer did do you a big favor. That is road hazard and it's normally not covered. Whats to stop someone from getting behind a truck spilling crushed stone all over the highway and then expecting the dealer to cover the repair. Ya, it's a bad design no doubt, but still most dealers will not cover this kind of damage.

And Yes, the 2019's will have the screens that are right against the intercoolers like they started putting on with the late 2018 models.

I just installed my Zunsport guards and they look factory. I agree that the plastic guards won’t help much for protection, and I doubt that airflow restriction from grill guards will be an issue. Zunsport told me they have sold 20,000 guards and never had a complaint. Plus, most people have rad fins that are eventually completely bent closed (see Porsche 997) and seem fine. I’m looking forward to the Zunsport look and protection! Anyone not wanting to buy this car because of it is silly lol. I just wish hey made one for the upper grill.
