edit: My assumption is the 3 years free me includes 3 years map updates. So it has to register the me account to initiate an auto download.

yes, i registered. just login and i see my car but I dont see connection between MBme and nav updates.
Next month I have my A service so I'll ask local guru.

I don’t know that they are connnected just thinking that my updates in previous makes have costed $$ and perhaps the 3 years Mercedes me included free updates. This was backed up, slightly, by my car not resuming the download until it successfully registered itself and the me icon appeared.

Yes - 2019 forward with MercedesMe Connect app (ATT system) - and hardware update gives includes OTA (Over-The-Air) Nav updates - note for some MB models there were "rare" late 2018 production units which did get MMC (MercedesMe Connect) and hardware update
Previous app system is MercedesME - that app and that hardware does not allow for OTA update - and depending on model and year - Nav updates can be done as available by shop-Star-download-update/pr-shop-USB/or-disc - again depending on model and year.

Picked up my car yesterday. Downloaded the map update last night and it's installing now. Worked surprisingly well. MUCH better than old system, which was pay dealer a few hundred bucks and wait four hours.

To be clear, I downloaded the map upgrade from the MercedesME site and installed it via the USB. It was something like 20GB. Not sure that I'd want to do that OTA anyway. But this worked great. The website has a download manager that downloads to a USB stick. Insert that USB stick in the car and it detects it's a COMAND update, does the update and reboots COMAND.

I’m trying to figure it out myself now. As far as I understood you need to register on Mercedes Me , prof your identity via dealer and then all functions will be available to you...

Got my navigation update by the dealer while had my A service. Now it shows 2018-2019 North American edition.
So, for 2018 W213 (mine built 11/2017) definitely no OTA update.
