Map Update
I just checked Mercedes me and all 8 zones for North American navs have just posted updates. I'm downloading them as we speak. Downloading is for 2019 models only. I don't know if new maps are available for 2018 via a dealer visit.

I'm trying to do a manual download on my mac and I keep getting an error that says "Please format the storage medium for NTFS or exFAT" I've formatted the zip drive as exFAT - didn't work; NTFS - same message. What am I doing wrong?

I'm not a Mac guy, so no bright ideas. Did you download the latest version of the download manager? By "zip drive" I assume you mean a USB thumb drive of some sort. Is it at least 32 gig? Maybe try a different one. If you have a PC around, you can try formatting the drive under Windows. But if you have a Windows machine around you could just do it all there, I suppose.

Only other trick is to know it takes a while in the car. Something like a half hour. If the CAN times out (the screens go blank) just power on COMAND (press the volume button in the center console) and it will continue updating. You might have to turn on the engine if the battery gets a little low. I connect a battery charger/minder when doing this.

I downloaded over night on a MacBook. Need to have the SD card (or micro SD in an adapter) inserted in the MacBook before it would start. A few times I needed to "pause" and "restart" because the download was interrupted by my Mac going to sleep. The install in the car took ~20 minutes. I loaded all the updates for North America and the voice assist updates

Probably I've missed something but how to do this? Can I get a link for some thread about it?

It's one of the things you can do with the new Mercedes me, introduced in 2019. If you have a 2019, you logon to the Mercedes me portal. If you have a 2018, you have the old mBrace and must go to the dealer for map upgrades. Mercedes me is a big hidden improvement for 2019.

When you log into the Mercedes me portal, do you see a Map Update icon? I thought it was a hardware change for '19, not just new software (which is what the multi-zone update was).

My car has the LED lighting refresh. But I don't have any map icon showing in the Me app.
Looking on the Mercedes map update web site, it says map updates are free for three years, but for the 2018 with the COMAND system it requires a dealer visit.

yes, unfortunately, MB makes you visit dealer for 2018 nav update. I've done this month ago .

My car was built 10/10/17 and had a number of updates over the earlier 2018 cars, including the Edition 1. One of these was an update to the interior LED lighting where there were more color options available, including some nice multicolor varying themes. Also includes the Trackpace app and some other odds and ends.
Interestingly, my car also had the wireless charging pad and the carbon fiber center console, which per the DOG was not an option. So, no 13 VDC plug in the center console or old school ash tray - thank goodness. But, my car also does not have the 12 VDC plug up front under the dash near the passenger's knee - no 12 VDC up front at all. The only plug I have is in the back seat along with the 120 VAC outlet which I chose as one of the options.
A month later when Parker (Vehicle Virgins) took delivery of his car, it - at least from looking at a couple of his videos - does have the additional 12 VDC plug up front.
So, seems Mercedes was phasing in some mid year changes in the Nov to Dec 2017 timeframe for the 2018 MY.

I did the map update on my '19 as instructed and it was absolutely a breeze. Took about 15 minutes to download and about the same time to install . . .

All of North America is about 20 gigabytes. I don't know if Europe is less detailed (fewer POIs?) or whether you also only get local information OTA, but I can't imagine MB pushing 20 gigs though mobile networks to all of their cars.
